Tiger and the odds......
« on: March 26, 2010, 09:38:33 PM »
I like to have a flutter now an again when in the UK.

Ladbrokes are taking all sorts of bets on Tiger and his performance at Augusta.

I must say that pessismism runs deep in my soul on this and I  may well have squandered a fiver, by saying he doesnt make the cut.

He was out at AGNC with Haney after the close of the Jamboree and from all accounts wasn't in his finest form. Of course he has almost two weeks to get it together. How would you place your bet?

Bob,
I believe he will make the cut.

Haven't the odds of his winning been quoted at 4-to-1?

Cut is usually low 44+ ties and those within 10 shots of the lead. His odds to me, better than 50/50 if he concentrates his practice on the short game.

Winning maybe 20:1

I'm very skeptical of his  upcoming performance because he hasn't played any tournament golf since November, has only played 15 events in the last two years (leg injury and caught in adultery), and during this time the rest of the field has been sharpening their skills. I don't think the Tiger fear factor willl be there or significantly reduced with many of the younger players. I think he will make the cut but not be a factor come Sunday afternoon.

He won a US Open with a broken leg.  He can certainly win the Masters with a disabled 3rd leg.

Tigers C game is better than everyone elses B game.

I think Tiger brings his B game and wins. 4 to 1 sounds about right.

Never bet against him.  I am thinking a top 10 with a solid run on Friday that gets him towards the top but not high enough to make people scared.

Bob,
I say he makes the cut and contends.

Of course he wasn't in his finest form-that's why he was out after the close of the jamboree practicing.....

No way in hell he wins.

Remember folks that it's basically a putting contest and he's the best that ever lived.  Can 4 months practicing less putting erase the billion putts he practiced before his episode?  He contends but doesn't win.  JC

He is the 4/1 favourite here, next best is Mickelson at 8/1.

That said, odds don't represent the chance of someone winning, but rather the money wagered. It's why Chelsea have been favourites for the Premiership for the last 3 seasons despite Man U being defending champions - more money wagered on Chelsea, thus higher liabilities for the bookies. If you want to find the truest odds, then betfair is the place to go.

The Masters field is very small, and many of the players are a non factor. Add in the changed course, which stops players going low, then I don't see him missing the cut.

He's putted poorly there the last 3 years yet still finished in the top 6, including a runner up finish.

I say he makes the cut and contends, and if he plays anything towards well then he probably wins. The furore might just affect others more than him - and he might play with a freedom that could spell trouble for others.

Steve Stricker is the value each way bet at 25/1.

My gut tells me he will win.

I thought he hit the ball better than ever last year.  Nonetheless, at key moments in key events he failed to perform.  Bogeys on 18 3 of four rounds at Masters including bogeys on the the final two holes with an outside chance to win in the fourth round, 73 in final round of Players when tied for 2nd to finish 7 back of Stenson, 4 over on last 3 in US Open first round to cause him to play catch up the rest of the tournament; missed cut at the Open; 75 at the PGA in the final round, including 3 putt on first hole.

In each major, he was coming off a win.  Historically he has been absolute money in such situations.  Last year he was not.

The pop psychologist in me thinks that his performance might have suffered due to the mental gymnastics he must have been going through.  It is possible that having his infidelities exposed might release some of that burden.

On the other hand, I have never seen a person in any walk of life that performs better when going through a difficult time in a marriage.

He's much more likely to win than to miss the cut imho.

Clint,

That was a funny and clever line.

Given Tiger's complete golf history, I'd never bet against him. It wouldn't surprise me to see him struggle and it wouldn't surprise me to see him contend.

I'm with you, there must be huge emotional distress going on inside him that will affect his golf
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta
