Lost Farm, routing
« on: March 19, 2010, 07:45:48 PM »
I was fortunate enough to get to walk the new layout at Lost Farm (Barnbougle's neighbour), the routing is very great.

Looking for comments in particular on the 2 major aspects:
1. Retuning 9's - although a trip to the halfway house will be a steep walk up the biggest dune.
2. front 9 is Anti clockwise, almost exactly and back 9 is clockwise with a little flick in the tail for the last 17-18 returning back to anti clockwise.
Note the back 9 has two 'extra' par 3's - a short "betting" hole as 10a (I think) and also a second option to the LH dogleg 13th - what looks to be a great little par 3 13 A (I didn't get to this one.)

We all have our favourites, but if you were routing your ideal layout - does that sound about on the money?

Thanks for the report- I have been scouring the intertubes for any info on Lost Farm.  I am planning the golf trip of a lifetime for this upcoming December- fly to Melbourne, take in a couple of the greats and then head to Tasmania.  It appears they have created another Bandon Dunes- is it possible?
“Bandon Dunes is like Chamonix for skiers or the
North Shore of Oahu for surfers,” Rogers said. “It is
where those who really care end up.”

Ted, I haven't played Bandon yet - have a trip planned in July this year.

Mike Keiser (Bandon Owner) is involved with the land owner, Richard Sattler, and if the Lost Farm takes off like it appears it will, who knows what the future is, apparently there is Bandon Trials type land a little further inland that would potentially provide some respite on days where weather is too tough. Lots of forest/bush and heath type land.

And you will find the golf here sensational value compared to UK & US.

St Andrews Beach is currently A$49 mid week - some spectacular golf down here, need any info - let me know.

Brett - Did a tour there myself recently. Routing will be world class. I think the signature hole is going to be the short par three fourth hole. This hole is visible from the 16th tee at Barnbougle across the river estuary. It will play into the wind and has great views and a fabulous green. Seven and eight are also stunners with wide fairways and difficult greens. I have some great pictures of them I hope to post up in a couple of days.

The routing has two extra par threes as well, it will be interesting to see how they are used.

The par three fourth at Lost Farm. The hole will play 120 meters into the prevailing wind and is located at the tip of the course where the river estuary meets the sea. Bill Coore out did himself once again.

WOW.  Combine this with Barny's #7 and this complex will feature 2 of the worlds best short par 3's - cannot wait to get back there...

How good is 4 - on Sally's Point going to be - only with a bit of a blow though!

Actually, I think the routing of 3,4,5,6,7,8 & 9 - will be a magnificent stretch., it probably continues, 10,11, 12,13,14,15, also.

I have the new routing (without playing it - couple of holes will play differently than the walk - and the green on 8 will be controversial or maybe criticised for th esharp drop off on the RHS,  but I have it 1 or 2 up on Barnbougle. AS after 9 and LF with a stronger finish.

have holes #4, #7, #9, #10 AND #13 (very big calls!) as halved, but much will depend on a few rounds to finalise IMHO.

Damn exciting.

The eighth green from the left side:

And from the right. Looks like you don't want to miss to the right side of the green with that nasty grass and sharp falll off.

Since they built two extra par threes, it will also be interesting to see how the routing can vary based on the holes (and wind) in play that day

John, isn't the wind a crosswind coming from the right to the left?

Brett,

Wouldn't you call the back nine a figure eight considering the last three go the opposite direction to the first six?
I thought the hole you refer to as 10a is actually an extra hole to be played after 18.

The great debate is 13a or 17?
Which would you choose?

I think it's way too early to compare Barnbougle with Lost Farm.

John – thanks for posting the pics.

Do you think that RHS of 8 looks a little out of place, I am not sure, it looks funky, I suppose it will also depend on how it plays.

Ian,

In regard to prevailing:
I think that the answer is somewhere between you and John's.
The tee shot on LF #4, I think, is very similar in direction to BD#4 & #17

back nine: error ???
I called it clockwise - incorrect.
I meant to write 'continues anti-clockwise with a flick in the tail at the end where 17 & 18 turn back clockwise to the clubhouse.
 - but as holes 10 thru 16 continue in a anti clockwise fashion, with only really the 18th turning back toward the clubhouse...I thought a "flick in the tail" was an apt description.

I was told it was 10a - it is near to the start and end of both F9 & B9 - so am not sure where it is going to fit – it was pretty dark by the time we got back to it – so will have to reserve judgement on it.

On the 2 extra P3’s - firstly let me say I would be happy to play 20 holes every time.

I am particularly fond of short P3's as opposed to long ones, but the back drop to 17 just looks awesome and it will depend on how long it actually is and then how long it plays – I think it is 200m +. It looks as though it will play straight in to the prevailing breeze and is uphill, so on a strong breeze day it feels like it actually invites Driver or very strong 3W for the long guys. (that same strong breeze may tempt driver over of RHS of big dune on#5)

I really can’t say which I would prefer – and am looking forward to having to make that decision. As this is much harder (to me anyway) than comparing existing BD holes to unplayed LF holes.

I agree that you can’t compare the 2 courses, but I find it interesting and fun to do, I am sure the strengths of each will change with many rounds, but I still feel I am personally able to walk around the course, especially now it is built, and make a  preliminary assessment – sure it is not locked in, but I will also enjoy looking back at what I thought of the holes in March 2010 and comparing them to how I feel about them after a few rounds.

Cheers
Brett

Moral of the story, you need to be a #1 Draft pick and play for St Kilda to get a game there at the moment!

Wow.

The contours look wonderful, and setting is gorgeous.

That little par-3 on the edge of the property is pretty darn cool.

Bottom line, I need to get to Australia.

The pic with the massive dune in front of the tee with the estuary to the right is a short 4, you can see the green poking out from behind the other end of the dune there.

Ash,

Depending on who you know, it would appear from the pictures you can have a hit there already!

I'm heading down next month, and have been told to expect to be able to play 15+ holes on the new course.

Andrew,

Is that Brendon Goddard and Nick Reiwolt in the pictures?!

Looks like a nice green complex  :o

Duncan,

Yes it would appear that it is 'Saint Nick' and Goddard.  I thnk Goddard is a member of either Yarra Yarra or Kingston Heat and plays off a very low mark.  Nice to see he appreciates good architecture too, shame about where he was drafted though...

Question:

In some of those aerials, the land surrounding the holes looks to be completely flat.  How much of the rumply contours are manufactured and how much was there?
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

JC,
There was(is) a section  of land that is very flat, and quite low as well.
They have ended routing holes thru and in and out of it.
Holes #1 & #2 start thru the flat area, #7 fringes it and #8 starts on the edge ot it. Finally 16 begins in it and skirts the Nth edge of it.
It will be interesting to see how 1,2,16 play in particular.

The entrance area is a little flat also, with the P5 12th getting a fair bit of work- but it doesn't detract from the hole.

In fact C&C seem to have done a great job of incorporating the land into the routing. the area you speak of, is surrounded by many great golf holes, and look down on them a little, so that will add something along with the the views from the big dunes and clubhouse environs allowing great views across this area.

Nice pics Andrew, did you take them? A few of the aerials were from a joy flight or from your arrival? Do you know the Saints boys? I wouldn't have thought the BD team would be keen to see pics with players on the LF?

Cheers

There was(is) a section of land that is very flat..it will be interesting to see how 1,2,16 play in particular.

Bill said on Friday that he knew from the outset that a number of holes had to go through the flat area. He wasn’t comfortable in trying to push into the open dunes, and there was only so much “playable terrain” available. The opening holes are intentionally set in the flats and (I think) they build anticipation. He liked the idea of using the holes in the flats to set up the next run through the dunes.

He told a funny story about standing on the 16th tee with Mike and Mike saying why in the world would I want to go over there? But anyone who has stood on the 18th tee and looked both right and down the hole will know exactly why he choose to finish on that location.

He also said that he hopes Lost Dunes is a fine compliment to Barnbougle Dunes. He had lots of wonderful things to say about Tom’s work.
