Women's Australian Open at Commonwealth
« on: March 10, 2010, 04:46:34 PM »
Commonwealth has been the subject of much discussion over the years on GCA, attracting its share of praise and criticism.

I'm pleased to report that the club has really turned a corner over the last five years, and is hosting the Women's Australian Open starting today.  I haven't been there since Christmas, but am hearing that the course is looking absolutely fantastic.

I can't wait to see pro golf at my home club - who will be out there at the weekend?

Chris, the course looks fantastic. And with a modest south easterly today it was a real challenge for the ladies.

looks in great nick, what sort of pace would they get the greens for the ladies?

Matt, I think they are aiming for about 11. They would have been about 10 today. With fine weather forescast for the last three days they should firm up enough to pick up the required pace.

The greens look like they are running quicker than 11.

I've never seen CGC before so I'm very interested in seeing it. It looks wonderful.

For anyone who has played it, is there anything 'wrong' with the 1st hole?

Michael, the first is probably the weakest hole at Commonwealth. Whilst most of the rest of the course adheres to a strong strategic principle where the tee shot closest to the fairway hazards (usually inside the dogleg) is rewarded with the easier second shot, the first is completely the opposite. It is also signifcantly over bunkered and has a pretty average green in comparison to the rest of the course.

Like the weeks before the Masters at Kingston Heath, last weeks rain came at a perfect time. The course looks fantastic.

You have to love melbourne bunkers - hard to maintain however, hand mowing to the edges, but worth it

It's too bad the event isn't televised in the U.S.  I would love to see how the course plays.  Anything sandbelt in Australia perks my interest.

Having not seen the course for many months I was blown away by Commonwealth today - I never thought I'd see it look as good as it does for this tournament.

The combination of significant tree removal, legend couch in the fairways and improved mowing lines is fantastic.  Remember that a few years ago it was soft, narrow and seriously overgrown.

Should be a great shootout between Webb and Davies tomorrow.

We're getting highlights show late night on Sky. The course looks wonderful. I love those bunker shadows! Flashed up faces and Australian sun angles really work together!!!

The club has a really good website. David Scaletti photos and nice illustrations. I especially enjoyed this page:

Photos of how to dress. Splendid! ;D ;D ;D

cheers,

Congratulations to Mark Prosser and his crew!

Good to see an ex RM guy doing such a great job, everything about tournament prep he learned from years with the one and only P McCall  ;D

Some pretty good bunker maintenance going on there also, this was from years and years Mark spent with Niall out in Jika Jika  ;)

The course certainly did look good.

Anyone else find it of interest that the ladies were challenged by the greens?

It was difficult to pick the full movement up on the tv screen but it does appear the contours provided a solid test for the field.

What type of green would the girls typically find on the tour in the US? Is there a good mix of style and pace?

Cheers - Lyne

You're not the only one Lyne. I noticed that they couldn't sink many putts either.

Anybody know how quick they were actually rolling?

I thought I heard the commentators saying they were at 10.5 or 11. Certanly not quick by men's tournament standards. Is that pace common for ladies events?

In my experience John, 10 seems to be roughly the average. But then again I've only been to 3 or 4 ladies tournaments.
