Definitely agree with Westover.  Never played the Ranch, but i know Southwick CC across the street may get my vote for worst golf course conditioning...

I would also put a vote in for Franconia GC in Springfield, MA.  Short, but alot of character.  Recent renovations have made the course pretty exciting start to finish.

Good point. There aren't that many high end golf courses in the L.A. area and likely non are better than Rustic. I've played Palos Verdes dozens of times and it's an underappreciated course. It provides a different kind of golf than the other courses I mentioned. Very hilly, lots of kikuyu and great views, with a nice layout and cool holes as well. It might not be as good as Rustic, but it's close IMO. On a hot day I'd much rather play Palos Verdes with some cool ocean breezes than Rustic in the valley.

My prep school's home course was Westover. A very fun and underrated track. The thing I remember the most was the planes that came roaring in over your head on the 12th tee. Always thought is was a good competitive advantage

Hoffman is nice, but the pace of play there is horrible on weekends and holidays, 6hrs.
I haven't had a chance to play Del Paso since the redo, the old course was too short and tight.
Morgan Creek was too tough to be fun, but I have heard they softened it up when it went public.

1. Charlotte Golf Links (altough relatively inexpensive)
2. Charles T. Myers (muni)
3. Quail Hollow Club (or, depending on my mood, Charlotte Country Club)

I seriously considered those and I've played both. I'd also put Robinson Ranch valley course into that same group. While all great courses, I feel they fall just short of Palos Verdes. There's a charm and more enjoyable setting that those other 3 don't have. Again, L.A. doesn't have a great selection of high-end public courses.

Albuquerque

1. Public All -- Paa-Ko Ridge (30 minutes out)

2. Public Budget -- UNM Championship

3. Private -- Nothing of note--there are at least a couple other publics better than the best private (Four Hills).


Realistically, if you've made the effort to get to Albuquerque, then Black Mesa is well worth the 90 minute drive.

Niagara Region, Ontario, Canada

Public Access (High-End) -
In my opinion, there isn't anything public that's worth spending $100 for in Niagara.  The two courses at Legends on the Niagara (Battlefield and Usshers Creek) and Grand Niagara (Rees Jones) are okay but don't offer enough value.  Don't even THINK about playing Thundering Waters (Bo Danoff/John Daly) - it's mediocre at best.  LochNess Links in Welland (Graham Cooke design) is likely the best choice here but they are going private in 2010.

Public Access (Budget) -
Whirlpool GC (Stanley Thompson) is a wonderful track right on the Niagara Parkway and it's only $50.00 to walk during the week.  Peninsula Lakes (Rene Muylaert) is a pretty solid 27 hole facility in Pelham, just outside St. Catharines.  About a half hour away in Hamilton is the excellent municipal King's Forest GC, which is only $55.00 to walk during the week.

Private (Access Not an Issue) -
Hamilton GCC (Harry Colt) is one of the top five courses in Canada and is about a half hour away if you drive really fast (which I would be excitedly doing if I got the invite).  In the region, Lookout Point (Walter Travis) sits on beautiful land in Fonthill with expansive vistas of the Niagara Escarpment and is a truly great design.  Cherry Hill (Travis) and Burlington GCC (Thompson) are also excellent and within a half hour drive of Niagara.
