Hello all,

My name is Nick Campanelli.  I am a “newbie” to Golf Club Atlas, and look forward to future discussions with like-minded golf enthusiasts.  I was referred to the site by Jason Sloan (also a new member and long time college friend) and have been addicted ever since.

A little bit about myself.  I grew up in Enfield, CT, graduated from Penn State University in 2007 (BLA Landscape Architecture), and am now working for Copley Wolff Design Group, a small typical landscape design firm located in downtown Boston.  While I am not currently working in the golf industry, I am pushing towards a career in Golf Course Architecture.     

If anyone is in the Boston / CT area and is interested in playing some golf or even want to grab a beer, let me know.  I’m always looking to meet new people that share similar interests.  I’m one of those guys that will drive an hour or two to experience a new course.  On a side note, good luck to anyone participating in this year’s Armchair Architecture Contest that Charlie G has put together.  Thanks Charlie!

Kelly, thanks for asking and i look forward to future discussions.  I'm sure Adam will have some additional thoughts.  I, personally, have mixed opinions about what LEED stands for and how the process is implemented for projects as an LA.  Do i support the idea of creating a "green" rating system? Yes.  Do i feel that LEED is the tell all way to do so? No.  Is there a perfect solution?  I would argue no given each site is different.  Overall, I would consider LEED compliance to be another way for Uncle Sam to gain some cash from developers.  I would rather see tax credits or incentives given to a projects whose owners and designers take initiative to create an environmentally responsible product that responds to its site.  This seems to more appropriate than doing only whats needed to comply with a universal rating system.

A landscape architect's role in the process is minimal compared to say that of the architects or engineers.  Newer versions of LEED are incorporating site issues more and more into the equation, but version 2 (which many projects are still working with) does not.  Some of our responsibilities seem more obvious than others....increasing the amount of vegetated open space, reducing irrigation needs, etc.  Others responsibilities like using recycled materials in the design and reducing heat island effect may often be overlooked if not forced to comply with a rating system.

No, I went to Simsbury HS, well before your time -- graduated in '88.  Back then we played  you guys in hoops and soccer, but I can't remember if we also played you in golf.

For the amount of money and time you invest in it, the USGBC reaps more of the benefits. It's more of a fancy title at the end of your name and loads of money for them. I'm looking into more relevant LA certifications now, like the Sustainable Sites Initiative. I think you can safely color me disappointed with the whole LEED process.

Welcome to GCA.com from Concord, MA.

I am working on the other end of sustainability from you. i.e. inside the buildings. The idea, of course, being that it all goes to improving the quality of the outside anyway.

Not sure how long you've lived in the Boston area, but there are several decent public options beyond Red Tail and Pine Hills. Butterbrook just over the line in Westford is very decent value at $70 on the weekend.

Of course, it's always nice when a friend asks you for a game at Concord Country Club, TCC, Essex etc.

Possibility I might be working near in Quincy in Q2 2010. If so we'll have to do a game at Granite Links or something like that.

Bill, I'm relatively new to the area.  Only been her for about a year now.  I would have have to say Widow's Walk in Situate so far.  You?  I have yet to get on any of the private clubs in the area.
