Patrick,

One more NBA question....

What are your thoughts on Kevin Garnett?

I used to love him, but he went from a respected HOF player to an absolute thug (still a HOF player though).

That fact that he now acts like he's "Mr Intensity" and how he always tries to pick fights with rookies or someone much smaller than himself makes him a huge pussy IMO.

Plus, now that he's joined the Celtics, it appears to me that he's forgotten how to speak.  I can't understand the guy anymore and do you remember when they won the title?  His speech on the floor was "FEfjdfghadfhdkhafdfadkdldser!!!!....."  I can understand a lifetime of dreaming to win a championship, but that's how he reacts?  ???

I just don't get the guy anymore and under no circumstances would I want him on my team.  Sorry Jordan Wall  ;D

Thanks.

Edit - Oh, and he screams obscene and derogatory things at the crowd REALLY loud.  Every time he plays you can hear it on the mic.  He's an embarassment to the KG that once played for your team Patrick and he's turned into a dirty player.  It's too bad.

Hi Greg and thanks for the question. I went to Trinity School at River Ridge, one of the very best high schools in the country.

I did play on the golf team for 4 years in high school. I usually played #2 on the team behind my buddy Andrew (who came down to AMU with me) who was #1 and was/is a very good scratch golfer. I never was better than a 12 handicap and only broke 40 once in our nine hole matches. I fought a vicious power fade all through high school but always had a pretty good short game. (Which still rears its ugly head now days every once in a while.) I also fired 80 and 82 in the sectional practice rounds only to shoot 100 both times in sections. So although not stellar by any means, I played and had a lot of fun playing high school golf.

Thanks for the question Pat.

I am going to be the sales rep for Scratch in South Florida selling them to both golf pro shops and the stores. I expect that the stores will be the bigger clients in terms of volume just because pro shops are carrying less of the hard goods these days but that some of the clubs will be great once a handful of members start playing them and word spreads.

I don't want to speak for Ari or the other guys running the show in terms of the company's strategy overall but from what I infer it is to continue to grow in the niche they've built of high end, customized wedges and irons. (and hybrids and putters now too) To me it really feels like a grass roots type movement of marketing in that they are not trying to sell every golfer on the planet their wedges but rather they want to sell them to just the right golfers who will become firm believers in their wedges. As a result they've done a great job of creating a growing group of "raving fans" as one might say and as such no one who plays Scratch wedges/clubs does so without telling everyone they meet about how great they are. With that in mind my personal strategy will be to get as many people as possible to see them in person and try the clubs. I'm convinced that once you see them in person and how beautiful and well made they are and how great the feel when you hit them that you will want to buy them.

Patrick,

Something I've been meaning to add....

This past spring I ordered a 56(bent to 54) D/S and a 60 S/S.  All I can say is that you've got one hell of a wedge.  I've played Cleveland wedges almost my entire golfing life, but Scratch has my business now.

Jon Eggling helped me get what I needed and he couldn't have been a nicer guy.

I recently ordered a 54* and 58*, both S/S.  Can't wait for them to arrive.  I have CG12 zip groove Clevelands 52-56-60, all 10* bounce, looking forward to less weight and less bounce.  If the Scratch turn out to be a lot better than the Clevelands, they will be great, the CG12s are super.

Bill,

The way I explain it to people is that a Scratch wedge makes the new premium balls feel like an old tour balata 90.

It's awesome.  :)

I'm typing with the expectation that you (and Ari and others at Scratch) understand that I'm just offering my opinion. But, it Sounds like to me that the best strategy to sell the Scratch brand wouldn't be in the pro shops and Golfsmith's of the world, but directly to the type of golfer that Scratch markets to: (seemingly) the mid to low handicap, serious golfer who plays alot and really cares about his equipment. If I were running a Golf company in a similar stage (obviously not) I would be doing everything I can to get Scratch wedges (and irons) into as many bags of the best low handicaps in the region, maybe even by heading out to local state-am tournaments with Demo tables set up and offering the clubs at cost+10% or something like that. In my experience at various courses all it takes is the best two or three golfers at the club playing a certain driver, set of irons, wedge, putter, etc... before the mid handicappers (the wannabes  8) ) see and what it for themselves, and so forth and so forth.

I'm tip-toeing for a reason as I don't want to offend anyone, but I'm interested in the industry and curious as to the strategy!  :)

Thanks for answering.

That's actually a pretty good analogy. There so soft you can pinpoint exactly where on the club face you hit it as soon as you make contact.

Pat I appreciate your thoughts and have thought similarly that finding ways to getting them into the bags of some of the better amateur players from around the country would be a great strategy for Scratch. I've got a whole list of brand/marketing ideas and on it specifically are a few bullet points geared to marketing to those players. As I mentioned before the more people, especially in the target group you spoke of, that I can get to see/touch/try/feel the clubs the more I will sell.

Jonathan-

K.G. was SO good and SO solid as both a player and a person in Minnesota that it's been tough for me to see him become more of a sideshow and less of an MVP/HOF caliber player in Beantown. It's hard to describe what he meant to the Twin Cities during his run and just how much I have a visceral disliking of McHale for screwing it up so royally so many times. Luckily I don't watch the Celtics too much, so all the antics you spoke of that brings him down in your mind I won't remember 20 years from now when I tell my kids about how damn good he was. It was great to see him win his championship, and no player I would argue worked harder every single freaking game in a row in a bad situation and deserved it more than he did.

Personally I think he was/is every bit as good as Duncan. The two years he was surrounded by 2 better than average players (04 and 08) he made it to the conference finals only to have Cassell get hurt and then obviously won in Boston with Pierce and Allen. Had Minnesota had anything resembling a competent front office during his time the Wolves could have been every bit the dynasty the Spurs were. Alas.

Patrick,

I appreciate the honesty on your part and I didn't mean to sound too harsh in my other post if I came across that way.  Unfortunately, lots of people feel the same way that I do.  You're right though, he was one of the most likeable guys in the league and I loved watching him play.  I guess the Celtics have corrupted him and I now just can't view him the same way.  He's not the KG from your T-Wolves.

Prior to him joining Boston (and injuries), the skill sets that he showed night in and night out were tremendous.  He hustled, he was a team player, he could kill you with his back to the basket on fade-aways, going baseline, rebounding, filling the lanes on the break, pulling up for jumpers from anywhere, and his ball handling skills for a 7 footer were outstanding. Oh, and he was pretty good at shot blocking as well.  Guess what?  I just realized that he could play every position on the floor!! (unlike Lamar Odom....he can't run the point) ;D

Forget about Tim Duncan (an outstanding player and HOFer), Garnett could have been a top 5 all-time player!!  Yes, I said it!!

But everything is lost with Kevin Garnett and I just wish he would keep his mouth shut.

No but I caddied for my buddy there once I think in a Minnesota Golf Association qualifier. Honestly I can't remember it much but it was before I became a GCA junkie.

Patrick, your appraisal of Pensacola Country Club among the pantheon of Florida golf courses?  (Based on your one round here earlier this year)

I am so glad to hear you are going to be working with Ari Techner and the Scratch Golf boys.  I met Ari when he lived in Eugene, Oregon and hosted my brother and me at Eugene Country Club.  He's a great guy and that company is going places.  You two are a good fit, have fun.

Bill-

I very much enjoyed my round with you at PCC and I would even go so far to make the argument that PCC has one of the most underrated sets of greens I've seen. If PCC were in Naples I would probably rank it right behind Calusa and pretty equal to the Hideout which is another great Florida course on a flat site much like Pensacola. Both courses have some very interesting and strategic holes with very good greens and are courses I could enjoy playing everyday. I also would rank the par-3 240+ yard 6th hole with it's one of it's kind (as far as I know) reverse-redan biarritz green as one of the best par-3's I've ever played.

Patrick, How would you rate Naples National to Calusa and the others in the Naples area?

Naples National is a great Hurdzan/Fry design. It's basically Calusa without the elevation. They have a great set of greens and a very challenging but fun course. I would give it a Doak scale 7. Calusa I think is an 8.

I would prefer to play the Hideout if given the option between the two, but given 10 rounds I'd only split it 6-4. I could also very easily understand if people preferred it to Hideout.

In Naples the top five usually goes Calusa Pines, then either Hideout or NN, Mediterra South, Old Collier.

Patrick,

I know this is a gca forum, but I have to ask you about the NBA.

Did you enjoy Slick Rick Davis when he played for you guys?  Ricky is all about himself, but when he played for the Cavs, I loved him.  I'm just thankful that he and D Miles are not on the team anymore.

Not to piss off any Lakers fans out there (i've taking a lot of crap with pm's sent to me on this board), but can anyone stop LBJ and the Cavs this year?

NBA questions are always open in a get to know me thread Jonathan!

The worst part about Ricky is that I was a Miami Heat season ticket holder while going to college down here and had to watch him both on the Heat and on the Wolves during his stints with each. Anyone willing to shoot a lay-up at the wrong hoop to try and get a triple double is not worth loving in my opinion.  ;)

LBJ, with the key addition of Jamison and soon bringing Z back as well (what a farce that trade was btw) is going to be very tough to beat. I'd say they are the favorites for sure. Any team JC Jones roots for is bound to come up short anyway. :)

Just thought I would mention/ask the question after seeing the highlights of the team formerly from Minnesota, Kobe is a lot of things and you can debate just how clutch he is, but is there anyone better than him at hitting shots with a hand inches away from his face? I say no.

Where did you learn your trash talking skills?

Will you ever go to the senior citizen Harley bar in Punta Gorda? (Gator's)

Have you ever teamed up with a stronger partner than me?

Have you ever seen more beer consumed in a cart than by our opponents last Saturday?

Will you return to River Hall again?  If so, will you pack your own lunch?

I enjoyed meeting you and look forward to playing again someday.

From the phone at the Twins vs. Cardinals spring training game so hopefully this makes sense without quotes.

Where did you learn your trash talking skills?

- It comes naturally. I developed the skills learning from some of the best at Interlachen.

Will you ever go to the senior citizen Harley bar in Punta Gorda? (Gator's)

-Only if I can get a picture with Pinky.

Have you ever teamed up with a stronger partner than me?

-Loved the consistency which allowed me to go for it on most of the holes.

Have you ever seen more beer consumed in a cart than by our opponents last Saturday?

-Yes, but the effects (that 3-putt on 17) were as good as ever.

Will you return to River Hall again?  If so, will you pack your own lunch?

-Yes and yes. Nice course for a good price (hard to find in SWFL) but very bad service. Packing my own lunch and beers next time.

I enjoyed meeting you and look forward to playing again someday.

-Me too, lots of fun and hope to do it again soon either down here in FL or up in Minny.

Solid non-answer.  Have you considered a career as a politician?

Never thought of being a politician, but I guess you never know.  ::)

To be honest I can't tell you the last time I won 6 ways to 1, but to be fair I think it was more do to our opponents increasing fatigue and intoxication down the stretch than either of our stellar play.  ;D
