15 Courses in GB&I - Can you name them?
« on: March 06, 2010, 07:12:49 AM »

There is no need for the Hole Number just the name of the Course. They have been selected based upon fair to good quality courses (on the Melvyn Scale only) which I feel many may well have played when in GB&I. Also to make it easier I have not included any old photos to confuse you.

Good luck and no help will be available, Results will be printed on Monday PM (UK time)

Course No. 1

Course No. 2

Course No. 3

Course No. 4

Course No. 5

Course No. 6

Course No. 7

Course No. 8

Course No. 9

Course No.10

Course No.11

Course No.12

Course No.13

Course No.14

Course No.15

My guess is that all if not most should be correctly answered – 10 plus will be a good result.

Enjoy

I've played a few of these courses and also from looking at your response to Scott and Emil's posts I would suggest the following;

1 - Swinley
2 - B&B (Emil seems very confident)
3 - Fortrose and Rosemarkie (haven't played it in 30 years but looks about right)
4 - Castle Stuart (starter for 10 as they say on University Challenge)
5 - Not Gleneagles but could well be the Renaissance Club
6 - Seascale
7 - Spey Valley
8 - Donegal
9 - ?
10 - North Berwick
11 - Dornoch
12 - Carne ?
13 - Eden ?
14 - Sunningdale
15 - St Georges Hill ?

A lot of guessing there, maybe I should get out and about more.

Not having been "across the pond" yet, I have to work from pictures 100%.

I am pretty sure I see Muirfield and Dornoch.  But do I see Askernish in there somewhere?

You have let me down, I though you would have been nearly spot on but sorry mate a few errors. :'( :'( :'( :'(

Mac

You must come over ASAP as you are way off course completely, No Askernish or Muirfield, but yes a little Dornoch. Well if I do not include Dornoch many of you Americans tend to burst out into tears, so to make life easy I try and include one photo. ;)

I'll play along. A few stabs in the dark here, but you never know....

1   Scotscraig
2   Royal Aberdeen
3   Unknown
4   Unknown, but similar to 11 at Castle Stuart
5   Archerfield
6   Portmarnock Links (that contrived look to the bunkers and burn)
7   Skibo Castle
8   Unknown
9   Machrihanish
10   Wall looks like the wall at Richmond GC in London. New bunkers perhaps the work of Tim Lobb?
11   Dornoch
12   Saunton
13   Silloth or Southerness?
14   St Georges Hill
15   Blairgowrie

9 - Lanark ? just thinking of the Old Tom connection. Looks like it could be although the course looks a bit greener than what I remember.

Melvyn

Hold on there, Melvyn, I thought he was involved with all of them at one time or another!

Question for you - I do see some courses where Braid did work after Old Tom - were they active in golf design at the same time early in Braid's career?

that picture of Spey Valley really makes me want to play it - it looks a stunning oasis, just like another favourite Hankley Common.
