Has anyone beaten Ralph Kennedy's 3,615 (as of 1953)?

Isn't that a bit like Wilt Chamberlain's women? It seems so improbable but I really want to believe it.

How many courses were there through the 19020s, 30s, and 40s? In 1953, that might have been 80% of what was out there.

I've played a whole lot of places in nearly 50 years but nothing like 3000+.

Mark,
There were right around 5,000 courses right before the Great Depression, down to a low of 4,000 until the '50s when the number climbed back up to 5,000 again.

don't know anyone else with more than 3615, but...

the march issue of golf digest mentioned some guy with over 2500 if memory serves (i dont have the issue with me and can't find the mention of it on the Golf Digest website).

And candidly, podner, the likes of a certain GCA posting city councilman from the Garden State was reputed to have 'over 2000' when he was asked in early 2005, which really is not thaaaaaaaaaat many, as long as they are not Bataan death marches.  You demonstrate your obvious ignorance if you have not played as many him.   Do yourself a favor--allow him to clue you in.  Be curious to hear your thoughts.   ;)

Do you have any idea how many courses there were in America in the early 1920s, say 1921 or 1922? Where would one find that information?

Up to 1953 Ralph Kennedy had played on over 3,615 different  courses. He had an attested card of each one signed by an officer of the club or a professional. He had played in every state in the United States, every province in Canada and twelve other countries: Bermuda, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Equador, Peru, Bolivia and the British Isles. He played his 3000th round on the Old Course.

You can look it up, see Pages 26 and 27 of the Golfer 's Miscellany-Interesting Facts, Feats and Extrordinary Occurrences in the Royal And Ancient Game.

Alex Findlay played over 2400.

I know at least 5 people personally, including 3 on this site, who have broken the 1000 mark.

TEP,
Off hand, no, but if I do I'll post it for you. The number I posted earlier was a USGA figure.

Mark,
As I was going from memory I had the numbers from that USGA article a bit off. To be more exact: the peak in 1930 was 5,856, the low in 1946 was 4,809, and in 1958 there were 5,745. In 1959 there were 300 new courses under construction and 900 more in the planning stages.

I can hear some guys licking their chops right now.  ;D

TEP,
THere's a Clemson report showing golf course construction between 1878 and 2000. Looks like around 1,800 courses were built between 1920 and 1930. I didn't approximate the count before then.

The graph is on page 5

p.s. this is internet information, I didn't have to leave my house to get it.

Thank you for the info on the number of courses. I was primarily asking because, if Charles "Chick" Evans was even remotely correct in his early 1920s article about Willie Dunn Jr being involved in 900 golf courses as Evans says Willie Dunn Jr told him (it was part of the article headline), that would probably mean Willie Dunn was involved in about a quarter to a third or more of the golf couses in the world up until that time.  ;)

Of those that have played these impressive numbers of courses, how many of them were played by those people at a level so as to be comfortable saying they were played as the architect intended, to the best of their abilities?

Just stirring the pot about quality and quantity...  ;) ;D ::)
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

I played with Terry and The Black Hand at Mountain Lake right around course # 2000, and I am guessing he does not remember me  :D :

14. MOST PROLIFIC COURSE RATER / LECANTO, FLA.
Terry Inslee, a member of the Golf Digest Course Rating Panel since 1984, has played 2,532 courses in the United States.

The funny thing is my Top 10 US smoked his Top 10 as he had not played on Long Island, at least back then. We played 36 that day and I think he went down to Lake Wales CC to get a scorecard.

I worked on a fishing boat for 6 summers off of New Jersey and I must have met 10-12 guys that EACH held the NJ State record for biggest Blue Marlin.  ;) I am not saying that Terry has not played alot of courses, but there is a little Doak (saw the course at 50 MPH in a cart) in a bunch of these guys.

Mike:

Well said about Terry I.

Played with him a few times and his portfolio is truly impressive.

One of the best Digest raters they have -- few possess the kind of recall, analysis and total deck of couses as the man from Columbia, MI has.

I was avoiding specifics but I note that Matt Ward is on this string so I'll thank him for getting me out to #381 and #382. I traveled about 70 miles to play #515 with astavrides (also here!).

One of my better days started in Memphis. That day, I played Northcreek in Mississippi and still had enough time to drive back to Tennessee to play Davy Crockett and since there was still plenty of daylight, I headed across the Mississippi to play in Arkansas for 18 at Meadowbrook. Three courses, 54 holes, in three different states, in one day! I'm holding since my 539th course back on December 30 (Tamarack East) but we are snowed in... I get antsy...

To get that many courses, you need to be:
1. Pretty old.
2. Willing to play in some weather that's less than ideal unless you live and play exclusively in Southern California.
3. Well traveled.
4. Single or married to a woman who is very understanding.
5. More than a bit of a golf nut.

Getting to 1000, probably requires another 12 gallons of sunscreen, a chiropractor on retainer, and a job as a golf writer.

Getting to 2000, means you don't need to be employed, you have frequent flyer miles from your days as an astronaut, and you probably started your quest with a Bounding Billy and a brand new Schenectady putter.

I like to say that I collect courses the way I used to collect baseball cards. The major difference is that I might trade a baseball card but I'd never trade away the good times that I've taken from any of my courses.

Yes, that was quite a coincidence that we were paired together that day, since you left from a condo 1 floor above and 1 room over the condo I left from that day, and we did not know each other before then.

I'm  now at 752 courses (in 14 years of play) by the way.  I have to admit i meet most, except for the astronaut thing, of the criteria you mentioned though.

Just under 2,100 -- keep in mind there are at least 100 9-hole courses in that grouping too.

In my 17 years as a Digest rater I routinely averaged 50 new courses per year.

But my zeal for playing so many courses has slowed down recently because of other demands on my time. I've also been blessed with a great wife who understands my love of the game.

I'm curious how folks are counting clubs with greater than 18 holes?

For instance, I've seen some count a 27 hole course (say "Red", White, & Blue nines) as 3 courses, when I count it as one.

Only when a place with 27 holes has a separate nine that is not rotated into the mix (often an executive nine, such as at Pine Valley)  do I count it as 2 separate courses.

36 holes I generally count as 2 courses.

How do others count?

Hi Mike,

I think I count just like you do.  36=2, and if a course has 27, it more matters if the other nine is "part of the course."  For instance, Thistle GC in NC has three equal quality and length 9s.  So I count that as one.  But Far Corner GC in Boxford, MA has 27, with a coherent and long established 18, and the newest 9 built 40 years after the first 18, and differing in quality (but not length).  I count them as two.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

By my reckoning

27 holes = 1.5  ;)
