I think the course matters, the experience matters, and the demographics matter if we are talking about one's home club.

For a private club, the course definitely matters.  Obviously location matters too. But for anyone who's played 200+ rounds on a course which is less than a Doak 5 or 6, you'll realize that the course matters...One of the main reasons I quit my former club.  You need some interesting land/solid GCA to still have a fun and challenging experience after a couple hundred rounds...
