I am doing great Chip. I am looking forward to the Sr. Club CHampionship at our club to see if I can beat your dad. I love playing courses at around 6800 yards and when we play our course for the SCC we play around 5500. It drives me nuts. I get so tired of hitting a 4 hybrid off the tees.

I am going to be in DC in a couple of weeks on Thursday thru Saturday July 22-24. IF I remember your dad said this is where you lived huh? I will be done around noon on Saturday and am going to play somewhere. INterested in playing something? Give me your cell so I can call you when I get back from Mexico.

My wife speeks spanish and Diamante Cabo San Lucas means Diamante Cabo Saint Luke.

  Anthony

El Nino is spanish for, The Nino.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Greg, how in this economy could Diamante go totally private?

Seems like a perfect complement to Cabo Del Sol, but would have a hard time playing Diamante everyday.  The wind can be so punishing.  I think the GCA crowd will love Diamante, but I wonder if 'retail' golfers will be able to handle the test.

Tim, The real question is how could they not. Quite frankly they will not dig out of the financial hole 2, 3 or even 500 dollars at a time. Sell a few lots and a handful of memberships (OK let's call it 20-25) and you keep the bankers happy. Quite frankly as a public operation these days break even is about what one can hope for. That is just considering operational costs and nothing more. Does not work.

The other thought process is that selling land and "the promise of the experience" around a purely public course is not that attractive to the few folks who are looking for a first class club experience.

Combine the factors and the decision is not that difficult really. If they sell 2 -3 extra lots by going private they are ahead of the game, quite a bit ahead in fact.

As for the wind factor I have heard pretty much every comment you care to imagine. Here is an exchange I heard at Cabo del Sol last week referring to Diamante: "that place is horrible, wind blowing non-stop... I'm never going back" to which the other party responded, "i thought it was great, the wind was pretty tough but I can't wait to go back, in fact we are playing again tomorrow."

Come to think of it the latter did look a bit like Ran Morrisette!!!

Anthony....so it was 13 eh? Good because I tend to agree. In the scramble to get open after finally getting new financing after the Lehman Bros blowout, much in my opinion needs to be massaged and finished....something that I have not been able to do as of yet.
In this business it is not always easy to continue to make improvements after opening. The Owner is tired of spending money and unless it is an obvious failure or problem he rarely wants to stop and change anything...especially if the course is getting favorable reviews.

In a past thread I created a list of the finishes I would  like to still do and #13 was near the top....it needs a a large left fronting fairway bunker that bleeds into the mound from the lagoon, and needs to have the greenside bunker expanded and detailed..a little more 'chunking' and ragged edges on this hole and on others too. We just didn't have the time for bunker detailing.

Maybe I will be back.....but in all honesty I am thankful that it has opened at all. It was touch and go for a spell.

Greg Greg Greg....#7 got you down....you need to move up a set probably. I enjoy the course the most from the 6600+ yd set because it puts the risk/reward holes in play for me. I play #7 from around 235/240 yds [a three wood usually for me] but I have found a driver is better because its much more difficult to come up short with the tough pitch over the 'dragons teeth' [a term for that oft repeated and existing land form found on site]. Try it. Let me know.

#17 is a par 5 and the ladies can always resort to a putter or other short weapon to get up the green slope...which is why I argued for and was successful making it a grassed slope....there was a contingent that wanted it to remain natural sandy waste as it 'looked so good', but sorry, function first always trumps over form...in my book anyway.

Donnie....welcome aboard!
I would enjoy feedback about favorite holes etc, because to date they have been all over the board...which is great because it suggests a strong depth of good or better holes. #5 btw was another of the holes we just left natural, especially the green contours...all of which were originally existing. #15's green incorporated existing contours as well. Sometimes you get lucky while looking for green sites and end up telling yourself "how can I make this any better"....it actually would be more work and not end up as good. But this is rare and only happens on exceptional sites such as Diamante.

Paul, I have played #7 from 300 to 215 and from 215 to 250 it is OK, nothing great just OK in my opinion. My apologies as I just don't buy into the hit it over the green and watch it come back theory. Perhpas if I were in a stroke play event I would succmb to that strategy but I simply don't see that as a well conceived golf hole... we are allowed to disagree. I catually think it ios pretty cool playing from the left tees at about 145 or so and you have room to stretch it to 190 there and have a pretty unique hole. Lots of options to tweak that one.

#13 - Why put a fairway bunker ion the left? All it would do is rescue an errant shot (trust me I know what the left edge looks and plays like!). As wide as that fairway is???? Heck, I was of the thought that rather than the front bunker a closely mown area would be cool with the current green site.  Don't worry, Anthony just has a phobia about the number 13.

I think the 7th was the green I found that little army man on. Wasn't it.

Donnie

I have to tell you, my dad last week shot his first 69 with his first hole-in-one at The Emerald, the day after his 68 birthday.  Needless to say he was excited.  Not nearly as excited as I was for him though.

I am in DC a few of those days.  Check your inbox, would love to see you.

That was #5. I imagine that little kid was having more fun than the rest of us. Nothing like family day on the links... with exactly one family member acutally playing golf!

I'd take 3:1 odds for a grand that says you still have the army guy?!

Played Diamante today again. Second time around it was even better. WOW the par 3 second hole is awesome.

And the question about the hill on #17 was answered. My 23 year old daughter who plays about 3 times a year played with me and she had no problem getting the ball up the hill on #17. She made a nice bogey on the hole.

Second time around I saw something on #14 that some people may not like. THe hole is about 560 into the wind from the second set of tees. I hit a good drive and the ball hit a mound in the center of the fairway and rolled backwards because of the wind. Then I was left with a blind shot over a knoll which makes it impossible to see the fairway. I know some people will have a problem with this as it makes a hard hole really hard and some would say maybe too hard. But I am sure these mounds were natural in that spot or were they Paul? Do those mounds in the middle of that fairway bother anyone else who has played it?

#16 may also go on my list of favorite par threes like #10 at Pacific Dunes. Hit 5 iron to this 141 par 3.
ANd I looked at the green on # 9 again and Greg I know you do not like this saddle type green but looks like they just leveled the dune in this spot and left the false front. Still may be my farovite hole on the course.

Ocassional GCA contributor and former Nicklaus Design Associate Kurt Bowman has just labeled Diamante as the greatest thing since sliced bread (or round tortillas).

I've thought this course has looked like a TON of fun to play ever since I saw an arial picture of the site.  Maybe I'll get down to Cabo soon enough to see it in person!

It is a blast with a 15-20 MPH wind. Calm conditions or 30+ MPH wind and it merely excellent.

Paul, Paul, Paul... you have led me astray. Below is the photo from my last round at your Lovely creation. As you see I took your advice, knocked it over the green in hopes the ball would return to the putting surface... Well it did not quite make it and left me with a rather fast putt.

Playing partners were obvously entertained and asked "Who is this Cowley guy you are cursing?"

Bill has an excuse... as you see it was cloudy and a bit moist the turf was.

Please call me and come out and see the new 6th and 7th as well as the new green site for #5. That or I am sure I'll see you "along the marina"... fitting that our first encounter was there.
