DawsonGolf Radio debut today at 4 EST
« on: February 13, 2010, 01:17:20 PM »
This should be interesting. Two guys in the unique position to say exactly what is on their minds without worry of repercussions. Can we handle the truth? I hope it is like seating with 2 friends in the living room commenting on current events.

From DawsonGolf.com:
"DawsonGolf Radio debuts today and tomorrow at 4:00 pm EST.  Ran Morrissett and Jeff Dawson will host a live alternative feed to the Pebble Beach broadcast for one hour. So turn down the volume on your television and listen in.  To listen simply click the listen to button on the right.  Hope you enjoy."

The language used to market this event makes me nervous.  I'd feel more comfortable if it said something along the lines of "Ran and Jeff provide their live commentary to the event at Pebble Beach."
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Interesting notion and interesting reaction...JC, why are you nervous?  I'm quite interested in your reasons.

Broadcasting is the distribution of audio and/or video signals which transmit programs to an audience.  They are not "broadcasting" the event; nor, I assume, are they licensed or authorized to.  It seems to me that they are watching the event and broadcasting their commentary on the authorized broadcast.

The language they use, at a minimum, implies there will be audio of the event as well as their commentary.

That's twice in two days that we think alike!  I absolutely wondered what the motivation was behind the radio-cast.  You are correct that the tone of the release is somewhat combative.  There almost must be legal ramifications behind usurping someone's copyrighted footage for your own use.  Legal input, anyone?

If there's a way to get rid of the technical gremlins and sync up the audio, maybe the guys will try it again?  It ran about 10-15 seconds behind the video, and I didn't think of slightly delaying my TiVo until later.

My initial thoughts were these:

1.  Eliminate the technical issues...was there a test run or two?

2.  Develop some hard and fast topics as go-to when there is no action...dead air stinks.

3.  Make listener input easier to access/accomplish.

I do have a suggestion, for future events, even though I did not listen to it Saturday, so forgive me if they have done it already.

Have some call ins?

Contact specific individuals that have in depth knowledge of the course at hand.

I know I would tune in, just to hear someone like Mr. Huntley speak.

I think you guys are making some good points.  Adam, I love your expert call in idea.  Also, I have one suggestion...and perhaps other might disagree...but it is how I feel.  Keep the commentary tilted towards the positive.  Not naively positive or Pollyannaish, but here is an example;

Jeff Dawson made a comment that went something like this..."well perhaps Pebble Beach is the weakest course in the rotation now"

Ran follows after a period of obvious hesitatoin and reluctance..."I am not going to pile on Pebble Beach"

Jeff responds..."I didn't mean that Pebble was bad, I meant that MPCC is very good"

The whole thing took quite a long period of time for three sentences and the tone that it seemed to convey was crapping on Pebble and maybe that was or was not the intent.  But it seemed like it was for quite awhile (relatively speaking).  Why not start off with a comment that praises MPCC for being so good, then say Pebble is ranked the 6th (or 9th) best course in the US and it might be the weak sister of the three courses.  I think you say the same thing, but it gives a more positive feeling.

Like I said, both  say the same thing...both are honest...but one feels good the other feels petty.  Just my 2 cents which of course reflects my outlook on life...which not everyone might share.

I suppose the bottom line is that I love this idea of GCA radio that involves a broadcast with architecutral focus and I want to see it work and prosper.

I agree, Mac.  The bits that I heard were nearly verbatim from the recent thread on Pebble's rebunkering and were decidedly cynical at best, negative at worst.  If your target is bitter and cynical GCA fans, you'll own the demographic!!  If not, Mac it up.

Sorry... one other tech note:  one of the mics used was very iffy.  The snap crackle and pop made it sound as if I was listening to AM radio during a thunderstorm.

I look fwd to the next effort.
