Pebble Beach in June...
« on: February 14, 2010, 11:16:33 PM »
I know that we had a wonderful tournament here this February in quite benign conditions but what is the over and under of the winning score in June?

I was out at Pebble this afternoon at a friend's house at the twelth and saw both leaders completely botch the hole. The mistakes made thereafter, gives a clue that there will be no twelve under winning score, with or without Mr. Woods.

What say you?

I'll say 8 under.

Will it play as a par 72?

Runner up in 2000 was +3 . . . I'll say +3 wins this time.

Start at even par, +1 for each sunny day, -2 for each cloudy day.

Hole #2 will be playing as a par-4.  So, it'll be a par 71.

Winning score will be +3 since the easiest hole of the course is moving from a par-5 to a par-4.

Can you predict the June weather at Pebble with any reliability?  The wind?

You think the USGA will turn #14 into a par 4 and really torture these guys mentally?   ;D

Jim,

Other than fog, it should be golden as it very seldomly rains in the area from May thru October.  Here are the average rain totals for those months respectivily.

0.4 in,  0.3 in,  0.1 in,  0.1 in,  0.3 in,  0.9 in

Does anyone know when the course will be closed for the tournament (i.e., how long before and after the actual tournament)?

Never do I recall Woods getting upset with a tournament presentation or setup with one single exception----eg when they decided to make #2 a par 4 rather than the par 5 it had always been. Do you think Woods was concerned about having to play it differently? Of course not. What do you think disturbed him so much about that?

Tom,

Probably because if you miss the fairway, you'll have a helluva time carrying the ditch/baranca on your 2nd shot bringing bogey and bigger numbers into play.

As opposed to if it was a par 5, one could still miss the fairway, layup and still easily "save par".  Once again, its all just a perceptual issue but for the best in the world they probably have a very hard time accepting that they should get less than par on any given hole.  One of the more interesting "mind games" to be played in golf IMO.

Bob,

Tiger will shoot -12.

The rest of the field will shoot even or thereabouts.

Women will swoon.

As always in the US Open, I'll take level par as the winning score (unless it's at Oakmont!).

Should be a wonderful tournament, and bring back memories of 2000, which was amazing.

Jim's got it right - there is no predicting what might happen if the wind blows like it did when Kite won, 1992?

The USGA is playing Pebble with a par of 71.

It's weather dependent....  4 Days of Wind.....  Between 5 and 8 Over Par
4 Days of Calm......  Between 2 and 6 Under Par

My guess is that we'll get neither extreme of weather, so I'm guessing the USGA's magic number of even par will get it.

The new extension to the chipping area on 14 has made that hole a killer with a front hole location.  I was  shocked at the condition of it, given that it was installed in December and looked really rough when I saw it.  It appears to have healed in very nicely and played well for the tournament.

Small greens, small grooves. Firm conditions. Irons/hybrids off the tees.  Winnning score +2, even if Tiger is there.

Carl, My recollection from 2000 was the course was only closed the week of the comp. People could play the course up to that week but are not able to play the teeing grounds that will be used.

It's been ten years so my recall may not be perfect.

Bob,

I could see a very low score winning.  Certainly they have toughened up the course a bit and with groove rules changing, things won't be any easier, but that doesn't change the fact that there are a lot of birdie holes out there.

If Tiger plays, I bet he could get to -10 again.

Otherwise, I would say -4 or -5 takes the cake.

Cheers,
Jordan

I'd guess Tiger didn't like that his score relative to par couldn't be compared directly to other previous winners.

Can't say that it mattered much, he still killed everyone and broke a record I don't think anyone ever thought would be broken.

If it's firm =  even par

If it's soft = -5

Bob,  With the wet weather so far this Spring in CA is it too early to assume the rough will be fairly lush/thick come June? If so, even par may be wishful thinking. I do have question and it is whether there are 4 pinnable locations on the 14th green? From my memories of playing it and from what I saw this past week  on TV it sure looks like as though the pinnable area is quite small-will be interesting come Sunday afternoon if the green is spiked/ball marked up. Looking forward to seeing it in April.
                                                                        Wish you well,   Jack
