I had the opportunity to play Brunswick Country Club last week. What a great experience. The new, (old) restored (by Love) Ross greens were simply incredible. The ORIGINAL Donald Ross green drawings were on loan and on display in their new clubhouse. Pretty neat to see that up close and personal. Here area few teaser pics.....I'll add more to my review later on this evening! If these pics turn out too large, I can re-size them later....ENJOY!

Is this the one you were telling me about?  Those are WICKED looking greens, got to be very creative to get your ball to finish where you want...
I still like Greywalls better.

Thanks Rich.

Your BCC pics are a reminder that ususal stereotype of Ross greens is badly off the mark. His greens were not always (nor even often)  upside down saucers.

His drawings of greens for Athens CC, for example, were extremely varied and in some cases quite wild. They weren't built the way Ross drew them, but that's another story.

In your first pic the ramp at the back of that green is terrific stuff. I need to get down to see BCC.

BTW, the Ross drawings are very attractive in and of themselves. Looks like he went to color codes late in his career.

He started with the #10 green (in color) finished #11-#18 in plain pencil. When he re-worked #1 through #9 h drew the rest at a later date, also all in color. The drawing were beautiful and the highlight of my day there!

This type of Ross sketch does not show up as a type available at Tuft's Archives. See http://www.tuftsarchives.org/donald-ross/sketches/ for examples available there. There is some color work shown.
It also appears Tuft's does not have much available on Brunswick from spreadsheet http://www.tuftsarchives.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/rosscourselista-jansstudyforweb11-18.pdf (See page 4 for Brunswick CC)
It makes you wonder how much information is out there.

Played  Brunswick  on Friday and the greens were very interesting and challenging as Rick mentioned.

I hope to be allowed to play again in summer conditions.  Looking forward to my next visit to the greens of Brunswick.  It is definitely worth another play.

The green sketches were brought forward by a long time member family,  in just the nick of time to be considered for the new greens work (completed several years ago now).    A suitable record of the greens sketches will soon end up in Tufts Archives records.

The golf professional Dan Hogan explained Ross added nine holes (circa 1936) and then came back and remodeled the other nine holes in 1938, etc.

All of this, adding nine and remodeling nine,  essentially in the depth of the recession, might have allowed some time for the seemingly extra artwork.

I agree with the title of the thread,  WOW !

I also need to get a story I wrote about Brunswick CC for golfwrx.com posted!!!!!!

It is very cool to see that DL's team has restored those excellent greens using the original drawings.

It's also cool that there are architects today who have the cojones to build greens with wild contours like those seen above.  I am specifically thinking of some of the contours that Forrest Richardson built at Peacock Gap - particularly that "wing" in a couple of the early photos!

Greens with a lot of challenging movement are so wonderful, makes you curious how people can play a course with boring flat greens on a regular basis.......

Walked & Carried 36 holes yesterday at Brunswick CC, and was very impressed with the greens....really quite unique, with some ramps, platform areas and staircases that make for a long day with the putter if you're not on the proper level.

It was dormant, tawny, pretty F&F, breezy and chilly enough to necessitate earmuffs for the first 20--25 holes or so.  Managed to get around as a single in about 5 1/2 hours, so it was a "hale and hearty" amble, and I had no guilt whatsoever mainlining Heineken Lights in the handsome new clubhouse at round's conclusion.  Tee to green the GC is relatively straighforward, but most anyone in this DG would enjoy a day at this course....the greens really make it.
