Aukland Golf

Having never been to the Land of Bob Charles or Michael Campbell, please excuse my ignorance.

Who can offer an opinion as to the best 4-5 GC's in and around Aukland, NZ?  Also---where are the Big Fish in relation to Aukland?  Paraparaumu, Kidnappers, Barnbougle, etc.

Thanks in advance for the golf-and-geography lesson!

Joel:

Barnbougle is a 4-hour flight to Melbourne and another hour to Launceston ... it's in Tasmania, not N.Z.

Paraparaumu is near Wellington, about a six-hour drive from Auckland.  Cape Kidnappers is a 4-hour drive to the southeast, through the Lake Taupo area.  Kauri Cliffs is a 4-hour drive to the north.

The only course I've played around Auckland is Titirangi, the MacKenzie course, which would have to be in the top 5.

Joel,

Titirangi is the must play in Auckland.  Then move to other places.

All you need now is the spelling lesson.   ;)
(Can you pls change for search purposes?)

Seriously, I seem to recall Auckland (Middlemore) got some pretty good reviews here pvsly.  Maybe Ash or others can comment.

Greetings!

About 15 years ago on my first trip to New Zealand I stumbled upon a course called Murawai Beach Links. At that time I was new to golf and had never played when I travelled. Had so much fun at Murawai, that golf travel has since become a common leisure activity for me. It really was a course that got me excited about golf. Not sure if it's even still operating, but a web search produced the following link:

Jason,
Auckland is an outstanding golf club.  However I find its architecture a little boring particularly on the second nine.  However it is always in magificent condition and overseas players can gain access by writing to the club.

Muriwai is still in existance.  They have had to build some new holes and redesign others due to erosion.  It is well worth a visit.  However it is a good drive from the Auckland CBD and visitors with limited time could be visiting other courses.

As others have said, Auckland is somewhat lacking in courses worthy of recommendation. Titirangi would be the only one I would confidently recommend to a person with an appreciation of golf architecture. I played it just recently and have a bunch of photos that I am hoping to put on here.

In terms of fishing, north of Auckland by about 4 hours is the Bay of Islands which is home to some of the countries best big game fishing waters. It is also home to Kauri Cliffs which may appeal also. Alternatively, about 1.5-2 hrs from Auckland is the Coromandel Peninsula which is a great place for catching snapper, kawhai, kingfish, gurnard etc which are all great eating. Nothing special in the way of golf however.

I would personally suggest heading south to Hamilton in the Waikato where there are a handful of courses built alongside the river that are quite challenging and interesting. They are also very free-draining which is a big factor during the wetter months.
