Very cool, Sven.   Tough to imagine Travis wasn't involved in the expansion.

Sven,

The new nine at Oakland was designed by Walter Travis and Stewart Gardner, pro at GCGC.   Will post article when I get back to a computer.

Mike:

Do you have the full source for that article?

Waiting for Ed Homsey to chime in, but the early date on this makes it a fairly significant discovery.

You guys have amazing skills at digging and finding old articles and maps.    Does anyone know of any article or info about the expansion in 1910/11 of Brooklawn in Connecticut from 9 to 18 holes?
All we have is that "Cornell Farm" was purchased and an 18 hole course was made from the original (1895) 9 holes.  We do not know who was involved.    I presume George Sparling, who arrived in 1908, but its a guess.   For that matter, we do not know who exactly laid out the original 1895 nine holes......any help is greatly appreciated!

Sven,

It's from the September 4th, 1906 issue of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

I passed it onto Ed at his Facebook Walter Travis Society site.

Thanks!

Here's the RTJsr remodeling plan for Valley View golf course located in Roscoe Conkling Park, Utica NY.
The course was originally laid out by Walter Travis in 1916 and constructed by the city from those plans.

This map comes from the 2/10/1938 Utica Daily Press.

Thanks Mike.

Might have been a twofer for Ralph Barton as his plan for the Muni was created in the same time frame as his work at the CC of Greenfield, Ma.. The two courses are only about 3 miles apart.

Stanley Thompson's proposal for adding 5 holes to the existing 9 at the Bartlett CC in Olean, NY.  In the late 1950s four more holes were added to bring the number to 18. The article is from the Olean Herald of October 1950. No day was given, but there was a blurb on the page about the naval bombardment of Chongjin N.Korea and that was on the 12 and 13th of October.

Eastern Parkway GC. Bklyn NY - for members of the Union League - George Low layout.

I believe you had to register your golf balls at the DMV before playing here - there are 16 road crossings to be navigated on the nine holes.  :o   ;D

Corrected a broken link from earlier.

Lakewood CC from 1915 (Joe Bausch):

And after Travis laid hands on it, some 5 years later. No. 14 on the left side of the drawing looks like a bear, and the sharp dogleg right #17 (bottom of drawing) is reminiscent of the soon to be built 3rd hole AWT's Fresh Meadows CC.

My web hosting service has changed again.   So I burned a couple of hours to fix all the broken links in the maps I've posted over the years!

The last course that Seth Raynor designed was Mid Pacific CC (aka Kailua CC), which he planned during his Dec. 1925 trip to Hawaii.  Although only 9 holes were built, the plan called for 18.  Here's a map of the 18 hole course from the Jan. 23, 1927 edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Sorry to dredge this up from the past, but looking at Google maps this appears to be a very similar routing to the current course. I was always under the impression the club did not use Raynor’s plan for the additional nine.

Dayton CC

The course was reworked by Cornish a number of years later, and now looks like a typical tree-lined midwestern course from the aerials.  Seems to be some lost opportunities in the shared fairways included on this plan.
