Jim -

The Morristown plan is very cool. Remarkably detailed and well-drawn for plans of the period.

Again, thanks.

Bob,

I was thinking the same thing when I saw that plan. I double-checked to make sure I was looking at a 1903 issue and not one from 1933.

Linville Park / Linville GC - the Donald Ross course from a 1926 brochure created by the Linville Improvement Company. The link will take you to a map of the rest of the site, which includes about a dozen holes of the original course that was on the property. I counted a dozen or so shots that either crossed another hole or roadway on the old course.  :)

This is definitely not the quality of a L&M, however it is a routing map.  From the Detroit Free Press January 15, 1928.

From the Boston Sunday Post, Oct 6th, 1901 - a hypothetical plan by A. G. Lockwood for a golf course on farmland in New England.
He details his thinking in the article found here:

A remarkable late Victorian drawing. The newspaper article is illegible on my computer. Any way to sharpen the focus on it?

Thanks for this.

Bob,
Try this. Click on the article and it should go directly to the page where you can enlarge it, if all goes well.

Arthur G. Lockwood designed the first nine holes for Brookside CC in Pottstown, PA.   Today's 18 hole course incorporates some of his original holes but is largely a William/David Gordon production.

San Andrés Golf Club, Buenos Aires, Argentina - Mungo Park - 1907

Substantially different course as seen today. The last big transformation was 1960 when the lake was covered.

This site is now a county park.  Used to be Ocean County County Park, I believe it was part of an estate...Rockefeller maybe?
Brick High School was right down the street, I graduated in 1980, and that geometric corridor was still there.  I always wanted to hit drives down that row of trees!  It always looked like a course to me, I was excited when I found an old aerial that showed a couple greens.  Thanks for posting this Jim!
