One of the first golf and real estate communities in the US.
Click and it will go big:

Bendelow did River Crest in Ft Worth earlier than that.  Of interest is the fact that both places, his intent was to put the golf course in the front yard, across the street.  At some point later (and maybe earlier, depending on developer) the trend shifted to putting the golf course behind the houses.

Jeff,
I'd guess that the popularity and eventual preponderance of the automobile was the main reason for that change.

This is mainly Tom Bendelow's layout for RHC. A couple of the holes were lost to a land sale and needed to be changed, so their Pro, George Pierson, made the changes (holes 16 & 17).

Lakewood CC from 1915 (Joe Bausch):

And after Travis laid hands on it, some 5 years later. No. 14 on the left side of the drawing looks like a bear, and the sharp dogleg right #17 (bottom of drawing) is reminiscent of the soon to be built 3rd hole AWT's Fresh Meadows CC.

We need more of these time lapse routing comparisons.  Perhaps it should be a separate thread, but the side by sides are fascinating.

Jim, it may have deeper sociological roots than that, but certainly a lot of parked cars on the street with broken windows had something to do with it.  Many older houses had carriage houses, or garages at the back (maybe originally meant for horses)  Somewhere along the way, America went from sitting on the front porch and waving at the neighbors to wanting a more private space in the back yard.  Maybe the money savings of putting the garage at the front of the house, to avoid a long driveway and cars not necessitating they "hide" the garage/service area as it were contributed to the change.  Or maybe they wanted to show off their new cars, or wanted more area for the kids to play in safety away from the cars.

Not sure exactly why, but in landscape architecture school, I recall discussing that big change a few times.

Jeff,

Infrastructure - a road course-side only serves one home. Creating golf corridors and backing the homes up to the course is at least a two-for-one proposition in homesites and at least half the cost for roadways/services/maintenance/etc..

Don't laugh, yes its a place mat from the Grosse Ile CC (Michigan) literally "taken" this year. Donald Ross 1919.  Per "Architects of Golf" originally 27 holes.  Finishes with a very good lengthy par-3.

There are a couple on Nassau CC maps but they no longer appear. This one looks like the "Steeplechase" variety of links, but the long bunker   that spans six holes and the circus hole are pretty unique.  ;D

River Forest GC "course laid out by Major Webster".  From the Golfers Green Book Chicago 1901.  I chose this of the many layouts in the book because I'm a retired architect and the CH architect was Frank Lloyd Wright.  The membership list not only includes Wright, but reads almost as a list of his Chicago area clients.  I suggest anyone into early (pre 1901) Chicago golf take a look at this book.  It has the early (read first) layouts of many of the Chicago clubs.  The RR map is a short form to check if your club is on the list.  The book is available on line at the LOC.  The RFGC didn't last long, only until 1905 when the property owner, a Wright client, decide  to develop it.  However, the Wright Ch is still there today as the CH of the RF Tennis Club.

Bob,

Dr. William Laidlaw Purves, with a nod to the club Pro, Ramsey Hunter, who helped w/the layout.
