Brian Freeman,

The Dornoch map is brilliant. Can those in the know confirm/clarify for me what I am seeing?

Then>Now
1-5 > 1-5
6 > 6 tee to 11 green
7 > 12
8-12 > 14-18
13 > Struie 1
14 > gone
15 > Struie 4
16-17 > Struie 17-18
18 > Struie 18 green to the practice green

Scott

Something to read re your map of Dornoch circa 1906, Looks like the map may be the extension discussed in the article although they may have stretched it from 5960 to over 6,000yards.

So the current 7th and 8th lie along the old railway line up on the high ground, with the 8th green and entire 9th and 10th holes being added in later years?  Interesting.......

Scott,

From my reading of the plan, the clubs history and discussions with Rich Goodale earlier this year while up there, yes I believe you've got that right?

Cheers,

James

I'm told I missed the fact that in that pic, 1 and 2 are both 250-yard holes (I couldn't read the yardages when I had a crack at the above). Which reminds me that as we played 1 in May that Rich pointed out the old 2nd tee over by the fence short of the 1st green.

Ed, that routing is a lot different than what was actually built and exists today.

Examples:  #6 and #13 both appear to be par 3s.  #8 is almost straight versus the dogleg around/over the dune today.

The 18th tee is in the ocean!

The only known rendering of the Caldeno Golf Club built by CC Worthington. Note that there are only 6 holes shown. No date is given and this is very early on...

Scott: I believe your assessment is correct - although we never played the Struie so I cannot vouch for those holes.  Maybe next time.  I did not pick up on the fact previously that 6 played to the current #11 green vs. the current green.

The original #2 was indeed 255 yards.  I certainly would not have wanted to be putting on #1 green while someone was driving off #2 with a early 1900's era driver!  Thinking about that hole, with the severity of the green complex, as designed for a risk-reward tee shot or a 200 yard shot and a pitch adds even more to the hole in my mind.  But for practical reasons the conversion to a par 3 was probably the correct move, and still one of my favorite holes in Scotland.

I regret that I did not take the opportunity to walk over to the old tee and hit a shot or two when I was there.

Here is a link to the USGA architectural archive, 95% of which is made up of Flynn's drawings and plans. They may want to consider renaming the site.

Joe:

This is one helluva thread and has already ended up being a great resource but at this point with your recent inclusion of that Myopia Evening Telegram drawing of Myopia, I think a real distinction needs to be made on this thread that indicates to everyone just how different most all actual architectural drawings done by architects are compared to drawings of a golf course probably done by some employee of a newspaper, as that one of Myopia in 1901 appears to be. It's not much more than a stick routing and it's primary purpose may've been nothing more than to show the spectators what hole they were on if they went to see the 1901 US Open.

But Herbert Leeds put on one helluva show for the spectators and players but unfortunately the guy was such an outright elitist martinet he would not let the pros come near the clubhouse. They had to change in a tent and it was either this Open or the one in 1898 where some of the pros were so mad about the treatment they got at Myopia the next year, I think out in Chicago, some told the USGA if they couldn't do better than that they were not willing to play in their US Open.
