Thanks as always Joe!  The diagram in your last post makes for an interesting comparison against the Shinnecock drawing from the same year in reply #78.

This beautiful drawing of Rokuro Akaboshi's original routing for Kawana's Fuji Course (which I understand was passed over for the Alison routing that was eventually constructed) comes from Rob Miller's current thread here... http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,43954.0/

Not as ancient as some of the others on here, but I like them as they are hand drawn and they are of my home course GC de Haar (9 holes) in Holland, designed in 1974 by Frank Pennink. (Most of the greens were considerably changed in the early '90's).

Does anyone know where the original Ridgewood CC was located in comparison to today's course or who designed it?

By the way, I should mention regarding the original Travis diagram of Scranton GC (Post #204) that from the high clubhouse that is not shown but sits in the open space at the bottom of that diagram and looks straight west (over the course to the top of the diagram) offers some of the broadest and most magnificent sunsets I have ever seen on an inland site. And now that a number of trees have been removed it is even better!

By the way, I was speaking with Phil Young and Joe Bausch about this the other day but can you imagine how some of those diagrams and drawings particularly the very old ones got into the newspapers if they were from the clubs etc? If they weren't it would seem someone from the newspaper must have drawn them.

Is there anyone on here who knows much about the history of newspaper and magazine printing processes about a century ago and back?

Tom

I'm no expert but I have now seen enough old newspaper copy to last a life time. Round about the turn of the century most of the regional papers at least didn't have the technology to include photos, so they would include a sketch of the photo if that makes sense. The reason I know this is that they would often state that the sketch was from a photo. In this regard I have also seen course layouts, which are clearly a skecth of a plan like the ones Joe posts and the ones Ed kindly posted for me. Again on occasion I have seen newspaper crediting the person who prepared the plan from which the sketch was taken from.

So I'm guessing that the newspaper had inhouse sketch artists who would quickly knock up a representation of a plan or photo or whatever was required.

The question is how did the plans come about in the first place, were they plans prepared pre-construction or done after the event ? I've no doubt that there would be a bit of both but strongly suspect that in most cases it would be the latter, the plans were made after the course was built which is why you have to be very careful crediting some unknown on the basis of his name being on the bottom of a plan, particularly if that person happened to be a surveyor or engineer, the type of person who would be commisioned to prepare a plan. Again, I say that because I have seen reference to plans being prepared after the event.

The next question is why were the plans prepared in the first place and the answer to that I think is to satisfy peoples interest and as a crude form of advertising.

Niall:

I think all you said in Post #214 is both very logical and historically accurate. Thanks.

We do need to consider those kinds of things these days when we tend to forget they did not have anything like our current technologies back then.

Niall -

Most of the early stick drawings I've seen were prepared after the fact, usually by the club for its own, internal club bulletins or annual reports. Those schematic drawings were then copied for use in newspaper articles. (I can't imagine a newspaperman spending the time to do his own drawings from scratch.) There are no doubt exceptions, but I'd guess that was the usual procedure. In many cases they were, literally, the only drawings done of the course over those early years.

I'd also guess that many of the early stick drawings were not very accurate. Bunkers aren't shown, hole lengths are out of wack, etc. But that wasn't the point. They were done simply to give an overall sense of the routing of the course. They were not intended as construction drawings or as drawings submitted as part of a bid for a commission.

They are fascinating nonetheless.

Love 10 & 11 - back to back par 3s under 150 yds on the other side of the road from the rest of the course.  Now that's quirk!
