Rick,

Thanks for posting the 1912 layout of Brooklawn.  I have never seen that before.  It appears that holes 3-10 are very similar to today's routing.  I remember several years ago Jim Kennedy posted a picture of what is today's ninth green (prior to Tillinghasts work) and it looked much like the same setting as today.  I like to see how the old courses have evolved over time.  It's very helpful when the old layout is superimposed on the old.  Thanks for sharing these.

Bret

Yes, routing is nearly identical 3-10  Tilly  built the new greens generally in front of or behind the greens that were there.  We have some aerials that show this.  3 was shortened by appx 40 yards, as was 4. 5 was lengthened as was 6.  7, it appears he built the new green over the old one. 8 he moved the tee forward of the river and moved the green back about 40 yards.  9 and ten, it seems he laid on top of the old greens.  I used that 1912 map, and a 1934 aerial and paced a lot of it off.

Thanks, Sven.
That's cool to look at.
I don't know anything about the course, but the first thing that came to mind was Fenway Park (the baseball stadium).
That is: a design that is made to fit the (small) site.
Holes like 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 14 - you don't see those so much except when architects have to use every inch of space.
Who designed it?
Was it thought of highly in its day?

Langford & Moreau (says it on the image).

The search function will give you a bit of info on Acacia.

That 13th hole looks alot like the layout of the great 4th at Barbougle.

Acacia is one of the courses featured in Dan Wexler's Lost Links or Missing Links books.  I'm at work, so can't look up at home.

Cragin Park, Palm Beach, FL

Credited as a Banks design.  Was this course ever built?  The Blue Heron Hotel project that the course was associated with stalled shortly after construction began.

Sven,

Nice find!  Looking at the date of the article, wouldn't this course be a Seth Raynor design?

It's also interesting that the course included nineteen holes.  The nineteenth hole is to the east of Dixie Highway between holes 1 & 9 and 10 & 18.

Brett:

That was my thought as well.  A March 12, 1926 Evening Post article mentions that Banks was to lay out the course, but it also notes that Banks was to lay out a number of other courses that we know Raynor designed.  Here's one instance where lay out may have meant implementing preconceived plans.

OOPS!  :-[  He must have enjoyed Pasadena, he was playing out of PCC in this photo from 1922. Read that he succeeded James Foulis as the Pro at Calumet CC in 1912.

A 1914 map of Royal St George's which also illustrates all the shots played in the 36 hole final
of that year's Amateur Golf Championship (Spoiler Alert: J.L.C. Jenkins won ;)  ).

The Foulis drawing for Milwaukee CC (1899) posted above might be the most thoroughly Victorian design I've ever seen. Relentless cross hazards. Wow.

Have I mentioned that I love this thread?

I want to share two routings but have hard copies which I can’t post in a presentable way. (Not tech savvy.) One is too small, the other is too large. I would be happy to snail mail them to somebody.
