Care to guess these courses?
« on: January 30, 2010, 02:09:47 PM »
Care to guess the courses? Some are well known, others less, but all have been played or featured on here by GCAers at one time or another.

Let's have a prize - whoever gets the most correct receives a free day of golf at Holston Hills with me.  Swamp rats and all!

Hey there's 8 inches + of snow outside - I'm going sledding.  Good luck!

The 3rd pic is the 3rd green at World Woods PB, but I doubt this will get me a prize... ;D

I believe #14 is Long Cove -- don't think I'll be winning a prize either!

Everyone's right so far.  How about #'s 8-13?

Here's a clue to probably the least known course of the lot:

Sean Arble once mentioned on here it was a "blast from the past" for him.

Dale,

Awesome that you knew this one.  Have you played it?  I had a really great day there some 12 years ago.

6. Varadero Golf Course - Cuba

Dale,

Awesome that you knew this one.  Have you played it?  I had a really great day there some 12 years ago.

I have played it many times - probably 20 rounds.  Cuba is a favourite winter retreat for my wife and I, and several more from our club.  And I agree it is a really good course, there are some very, very good holes.  The hole shown, #8, in particular, is a great medium length par 3.  A friend made a one on the hole, something that is brought up on a regular basis when we play together.

I wish I was going there in the near future and could get a photo tour up on this site.  It would be educational for our American brethren.  It was originally a 9 hole course in the pre Castro days and was redone and expanded by Les Furber in 1998.  The clubhouse is the former Xanadu mansion of the Dupont family.

If anyone is going to Varadero, take the clubs and check this one out.

10 looks a lot like one of the uphill holes at the Majestic at Lake Walden (beautiful site and always enjoyable, though the gollf course could be way better)

12 looks like a Ron Prichard Ross restoration

Is 13 Black Forest? if so, they've really seemed to let the character of the bunkers deteriorate.

Good job Brett in identifying #10, it is at The Majestic.

I will label the rest at the end of the day.

Good job!

How would you rate the course and its conditioning?  How was the golf operation?
Who plays, Canadian tourists?

Well when I was there 12 years ago we were practically the only foursome on the golf course.  The turf was excellent, bermudagrass I suppose.  A very nice resort golf course.  Fantastic views of the ocean all around.  I had a lot of fun, busting open coconuts with my irons along the fairways and eating them.  You're on a peninsula there with a Cancun-type beach just below the cliffs of the finishing holes.  The operation was sort of spartan I suppose, though operating out of a Dupont mansion!  They did bring our lunch and beers out to us mid round.  Nice people in Cuba.

Yes, I suppose it is mostly Canadian tourists there in the hotels.  Dale Jackson mentioned earlier that he has been there a bunch, so maybe he'll give us an update on what's going on there these days.

Well, I would say the course is busier than your experience Eric, although it is fairly easy to get a tee time.  The conditioning is quite good, all bermuda as you point out, and the greens are slow.  They seem to have been built with more speed in mind - no dramatic contours - so that is a bit of a negative.  And operations are not North American resort standard to be sure, which to me is a good thing, I do not like the over the top approach at so many public resorts in this part of the world.

But, as I said earlier, I think there are a lot of really good holes.  I would say 1 world class, 5 really good, 6 good and 6 average.  But given it is the only real course in Cuba, the weather and setting are spectacular and the Cuban people so welcoming, it is a really great place to go.

If anyone is wondering about Cuba as a holiday destination or recommendations about where to say, etc., drop me a line.  I would rather not spend a lot of space on details most people are not interested in.
