Best Non-Doak or Non-C&C course built last 20 years?

If you had to pick one, what would it be? (Don't make a list, that's a cop out)

Jim,

I refuse to name even one because of the title of your thread.  It implies that only CC and TD can even come close to building a good course doesn't it?  Over a thousand new course in the last decade or so and you think only those two have built good ones?

Not at all, Jeff because if I were to include them, the answers would likely be Sand Hills or Pacific Dunes.

They get enough love on this site, simply trying to highlight other stellar modern designs.

Top 10 according to Golfweek Modern:  (u.s.)

Whistling Straights
Pete Dye Golf Club
Bandon Dunes
Shadow Creek
Kinloch Club
Ocean Course @ Kiawah
Chambers Bay
Kingsley Club
Calusa Pines
Dunes Club

Haven't played 'em all yet but my money's on Kingsley....I guess you have to throw Kingsbarns and Castle Stuart in there as well....

I think maybe the better question (or better phrased as to not insult) would be what is the best course built in the last 20 years besides Sand Hills and Pacific Dunes, which are, atleast according to most, the top two over that time period (and happen to be by C&C and Doak).

If that's the question, Ballyneal would have to get strong consideration (and that would be contrary to Jim's stated intent of this thread).

Of those I've played, I'd vote for Bandon Dunes and the Ocean Course.  I haven't played Kingsley--I'm hoping to remedy that soon.

I'm going to object, as well, on the basis that one BEST course is elementary school playground stuff.  Too broad, open-ended, general, pick your appellation.  It reduces golf course architects to Barbie Dolls.  We can do better than this for a thread.

Dunes Club  New Buffalo, Mi.  To me it blows Kingsley out of the water.

Jim,

Boston Golf Club intrigues me to no end.  It looks REALLY good...I wish there was more info available on the course.

Can you speak a little to why think it is as good as you say it is?

Ron, perhaps I should turn it into a fantasy draft then?  One round, pick your course.

Getting guys to discuss why they prefer one course over another...yeah I can see how this thread is completely off the reservation with the rest of this site.

I've probably not played enough courses built in the last 20 years to get a good feel for its competition, but its got to be Castle Stuart for me?

Cheers,

The Ocean Course @ Kiawah

Suprissed that it is not help in higher esteem here - I really think it's world class.

Based upon the replies here - whats the best course not designed by Doak, C&C, Pete Dye or Gil Hanse.

Whats the answer then??

The best one I have seen by quite a margin is Kiawah's Ocean Course.  My favourite one though is Lakewood Shores Gailes course.

Monterey Peninsula (Shore Course)

There are lots of alternatives that I might pick on other days but The Shore Course made more of a lasting impression on me. In thinking through the other course none had the same lasting influence.

I think Mike’s architectural choices were all brilliant from scale through to the incredible side to side movement used to fill such a large canvas. I think he pushed the art of design a little more and reached for higher heights in the overall concept. To me the course is made up of equal parts fun and challenge, which is a pretty cool accomplishment. Finally, there are not many better examples of a courses that embraces the surroundings from the design through to the detail work.
