Notable Public Access Course List
« on: January 18, 2010, 04:11:25 PM »
Has anyone ever received unsolicited advice on where to play when traveling? I'm pretty sure I know the answer to that. Like many of you, I'm asked from time to time where to play by friends, family, and business associates. This proves that at least some people are listening to us some of the time. Let's face it, the study of golf course architecture is not on the regular list of things people expect hear when asking what you do in your free time.

So deservedly or not (and according to Tom Doak I am not to be trusted) many people that I know consider me the de-facto expert on all things golf course related. The joke is definitely on them. A few years ago I started a list to help me with this enormous responsibility, and the list has grown exponentially since I joined this fine site. The purpose of the list was to have a quick reference guide when someone asked for a course recommendation. Anyway, I thought posting it may serve two purposes. First, to provide us with a close to definitive guide on public course offerings, and second, to create some heated debate on whether or not some courses deserve to be listed.

I NEED YOUR HELP---I have tried to keep this updated to the best of my ability over the past six years, but I'm certain there are some errors in regard to location or architect. One of the strengths of this discussion group is it's geographical diversity. So whatever errors you come across (such as Southern Dunes is more Tampa than Orlando, or sorry...that's the wrong RTJ listed for Makena South) please point them out. I'm hoping this may uncover some local hidden gems, but I've also left some courses that I know people with destroy simply because, well, it's too damn fun not to. (Hat tip to Jim Colton on code help)

One mistake:

For Washington State, you have

Semiahmoo, Blaine Arnold Palmer Vancouver, BC, Canada

I really would not put this as Vancouver BC area. It is only about hour and change from Seattle (About 2 hours from Vancouver and that is not counting the border crossing). You could put it as Bellingham, WA area if you would like.

I would also drop Port Ludlow (they had to close Timber 9 and really is not that noteworthy). I would also add following courses:

Washington National, Auburn, John Fought, Seattle
The Home Course, DuPont, Mike Asmundson, Seattle/Tacoma
Loomis Trail (Semiahmoo Resort), Graham Cook, Bellingham
Hawk's Prairie (The Woodlands & The Links), Bill Overdorf (Woodlands), John Harbottle (The Links), Seattle/Tacoma

In Illinois, you can now add Ravisloe Country Club in Homewood, a 1907 Ross course that got a facelift by David Esler, of Black Sheep fame, in 2003.  The club was private until last year.  A very fun old-school layout although it may lack teeth for the best players.  I would also add Shepherd's Crook, a 1999 Keith Foster linksy layout in Zion that is one of the best muni layouts around. Some would say to add Stonewall Orchard in Grayslake, an Art Hills track.  It's very difficult from the back and has some of the best public greens conditioning around, but as far as architecture goes it's only fair at best IMHO....

In Ohio, Stonewater outside of Cleveland is private.

I would add the following:

Black Diamond GC (millersburg, OH)
Sleepy Hollow GC (Brecksville, OH)
Aurora G & CC (Aurora, OH)
The Quarry GC (Canton, OH)
Blue Herron GC (Medina, OH)
Little Mountain GC (Concord, OH)

Wyatt,

Quit making this process too easy. We need cyclical "where to play" threads filling up Ran's memory banks and the occasional recommendation from left field to chastise.

Why Torrey Pines South but not North? Personally, I like North better than South...

Wyatt, also in Illinois you should remove Kemper Lakes as they are no longer public access.  For Cog Hill # 4, Rees Jones should be listed with Mr. Wilson due to his recent work on the renovation/upgrade. . .  I would also add the two courses at Harborside Intl. (Nugent).  Maybe not the greatest architecturally, but for someone coming to stay downtown, they're 15 minutes from the Loop during non-rush hour traffic.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the response. I will keep the list updated to the best of my ability.

Exclusions:

Stonewater (private)
Pine Barrens (private)
Stonewall Orchard (fair at best)
Port Ludlow (not noteworthy)
Kemper Lakes (private)
Hickory Hills (private)
Trump National (off there!)
Strawberry Farms (not list worthy)

Kyle,
Chastise away amigo!

Richard,
There is no plausible explanation for exclusion of the north. It will be on the updated list momentarily.

Richard, without the border, Semiahmoo is less than 1 hour from downtown Vancouver, and certainly less time than from Seattle.  Of course, saying without the border is like saying you can live without breathing, it can't be done.  And with the number of trips I make from Vancouver to Seattle, I would like to be able to get from downtown Seattle to Blaine in 1 hour, it is about 110 miles.  If Loomis Trail is listed as Bellingham, then so should Semiahmoo, IMO.

I certainly agree with the suggestions for added courses.

In Ohio, Hickory Hills is private...although I would think it is not too hard to access. I would add Granville (a terrific Donald Ross course in Granville). I am also a big fan of the Portsmouth Elks Club (semi-private Donald Ross design).

Get Trump L.A. off of there!!!

You can probably include Industry Hills Ike course, and Oak Quarry GC instead, but if a golfer wants to play next to the Pacific, they should travel to Monterey instead. :D

Also, Pelican Hill is really not L.A. Call it Orange County. I've enjoyed Strawberry Farms, but I'm not sure if it's list worthy.

Chris,

I've found some info claiming that Stanley Thompson is the GCA of Sleepy Hollow (Ohio). Is this the same Stanley Thompson that I think it is?

A little course not many people have heard about in Maryland is called Swan Point.  It's way out on the eastern tip, but it's a really fun course to play.  Possibly one of the only courses I've ever played with back to back par 3's (both very strong) and, with the possible exception of the 17th and 18 holes, I think it takes maximum advantage of the land.

I would add Fieldstone, an Arthur Hills design to your Michigan list.  We played there, along with Shepherd's Hollow and the Orchards during the 2004 Ryder Cup and, while it wasn't as good as Shepherd's Hollow, I think I enjoyed it more than the Orchards.

In Nevada, unless they've changed it since I was there, TPC Summerlin is private I believe.  TPC Canyons was the public access one.  Of course, that could also be dependent on whether or not you're staying on Summerlin's property.  I don't know that is has any architectural significance, but I enjoyed my round at Royal Links - not to mention now you can take some hot women as your caddy!

I might consider adding UNC Finley to North Carolina as well as Bryan Park - Champions in Brown's Summitt / Greensboro and Tanglewood Park in Winston-Salem.

Pine Lakes CC and Jeff Brauer's Wild Wing Avocet should make the list for Myrtle Beach, SC.

Finally, on to Virginia.  First, Independence is not in Williamsburg, it's in Richmond - the Midlothian / Chesterfield area to be exact.  I haven't seen it in a few years, but I was not impressed as I thought it was a rather bland course.  If you're going to be put Augustine on there, I think you have to add Cannon Ridge - a Deane Beamon design in Fredericksburg.  The same goes for Westfields in "Fairfax" or Clifton if you're being specific.  Laurel Hill is a solid and well-kept muni in Lorton.  The two courses at Wintergreen (Stoney Creek and Devil's Knob) and Birdwood at UVA deserve mention as very solid mountain courses.  And finally, might as well add Stonehouse right up the interstate from Royal New Kent to complete the Mike Strantz Virginia Tour.  For those two, you should probably change the "area" to Williamsburg as they're both much closer to play for Williamsburg residents than for most Richmond residents.

I would suggest you add Ol' Colony in Tuscaloosa, Alabama by Jerry Pate.  Not sure how it rates architecturally but it is a great piece of land and a lot of fun to play.

They are on par with Torrey North and South, so yes, they should.

Some corrections in Virginia:

Royal New Kent is a a lot closer to Williamsburg than Richmond

Bay Creek is across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel on Virginia's Eastern Shore and not close to Virginia Beach

Riverfront is in Suffolk which is not Norfolk (if you want a regional description, then call it Tidewater)

Old Works is 100 miles from Missoula. You best put it down as Butte area.
You know Butte, where Obama spent July 4th last.

I would add Hershey Links(Hurdzan/Fry) and Jeffersonville(Ross/Pritchard) in PA.

Pine Hill in NJ is now a  private Trump club.

I would also add Heron Glen(Schlegal) in Ringoes, NJ .

I would add

Annapolis GC in Maryland by C Banks

Southern Pines in NC by D Ross

Westfields in Virginia by F Couples?

The courses for Michigan look to be fairly elite.  Are all the courses in these other states of that quality?  If not, I have some other suggestions.
