Chris:
Da' mayor (RJ) is full of good advice, particularly breakfast at the Red Apple.

As a Madison-area resident, I'm not sure there is anything worth stopping off here for a round, because it would mean one less round at the links at Lawsonia. URidge is not worth a detour, in my estimation. (If you have access to privates such as Blackhawk, Maple Bluff, or Nakoma, I'd amend that statement...)
What is worth playing (and arguably not a detour, but on the way, if you go that way) is Spring Valley CC, in Salem WI (just north of Antioch IL, in between Lake Geneva and Kenosha), a below-the-radar Langford that's not in the league of Lawsonia, but has some terrific holes and would give you a real sense of what to expect at Lawsonia. A completely bunkerless 18-hole course that at @ $20 is maybe the single best golfing value in Wisconsin.

http://www.glcc.org/glcc/accommodations/accommodations.htmAnd I'd second RJ's suggestion of Old Hickory CC, in Beaver Dam (which is actually on the way -- Hwy 73 runs through BDam and heads north to Green Lake), profiled here:
http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,36792.0/Tuscumbia, right in Green Lake, is a museum piece, one of the oldest 18-hole courses in the state, narrow fairways lined by huge trees, and tiny greens -- interesting for what it is, with a neat old clubhouse. Right across the street from the Heidel House. Also, the Goose Blind in Green Lake is decent pub food with an OK selection of beers.
