BUT--Which of you travel experts, or area residents, can recommend a worthwhile course in the area to serve as a complement to the PGA Village complex?

None...there's nothing public worthwhile within 2 hrs+ of the dye course at PGA Village.

You profiled a the Pete Dye course at Harbor Ridge in Stuart (which I think is a town or two over) is pretty good...for Florida.

Depends on how much access you have to the privates in the area. Jupiter Hills is great.

Define "worthwhile." 

For the past few years, I've visited some friends in Stuart between Christmas & New Years.  We always play public-access courses, and I think the choices down there are pretty poor.  I won't go so far as to call them all Doak 0s, but Martin County and the area around sure has more than its share of 1s & 2s.  Not as much experience in St. Lucie.

A couple of weeks ago we played St. James Golf Club in PSL.  I thought it was pretty good.  Pretty easy to avoid condos and water, which is a big plus for that area.  Some pretty good holes and decent conditions. Cheap, too.  Design attributed to Warren Henderson (Arcadia Bluffs).

I've wanted to check out both Fairwinds & Indian Hills municipal courses in Fort Pierce, but haven't done so yet.

I did?  No recollection......

Nah---kidding.  One of the few Dye courses I just toured..didn't actually play.  Called the pro earlier, and because I'm with my own foursome, it's a "no can do."  Not easy to access private GC's in FL in Jan--March, especially without the benfit of a member to sponsor you......

Mom lives in Palm City and I pop down each Feb to visit and play a few rounds. I pretty much stick to the PGA threesome lately but the best of the rest is probably Eagle Marsh in Jensen Beach. A mid-grade Fazio but not an unpleasant experience.

Monarch in Palm City is private but might be a tad easier to get on than Harbor Ridge. It's a Palmer design..I played it almost 20 years ago so I don't remember how good or bad.

The Fox Club is another private in Palm City that you might be able to get on...used to be Cobblestone and pretty decent from what I can remember.

Jay- Have you actually played every course within 2 hrs of the Village?

Head south to West Palm Beach and play Park Ridge.
Roy Case did a great job with this landfill golf course and it's unlike anything in south Florida.
More than worthwhile.

I played Park Ridge last year and it was OK, but I don't think better than WPB or NPB.  Have you played either of those?

Both North Palm Beach GC, and the newly redone West Palm Beach GC are worthwhile courses.
