Golf Hole Hall of Fame

http://www.golfholehalloffame.org/

I am very please to be able to introduce The Golf Hole Hall of Fame to the GCA crowd.

This project has been two years in the making — about the same timeframe as a new course! A lot of hard work has gone in to the planning. My encouragement to all of you is to nominate golf holes and allow them to have the opportunity to become inductees.

As the site is just now out of its beta testing stage, please note that there are currently no inductees — the only navigable portion of the site currently is to nominate golf holes. You are encouraged to partake in this process — Honorary holes are those of regional importance ... Legendary holes are, well, legendary. What more can you say.

Have fun.

A very interesting idea, a few questions though on the criteria and who's involved;

who's on the panel ?

will it only include holes which still exist ? for instance what about the original "Biarritz" hole ?

what about legendary holes which still exist but have been altered or lost the features that made them great, or indeed have lost their impact due to changes in technology ?

will the list be reviewed or is it a case of once a hole is in it is in for ever no matter what happens to it subsequently ?

I suppose what I am getting at with these questions is that holes/courses have a habit of evolving as does the game itself. What once made a hole worthy for inclusion may disappear etc. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts but in the meantime good luck with your endeavours.

Who is on the panel? — Golf enthusiasts from all walks; writers, players, superintendents, golf mangers, and even a few architects. If you are interested in being on the panel, just send me an e-mail and a brief summary of yourself and your golf life. At present the panel list is growing, and there is a new emphasis on regional diversity — we are shy in the Southern, Middle, Midwest and Pacific Northwest U.S. — the East, Southwest and Pacific are OK. This does not mean new panel members would not be accepted from the East, Southwest or Pacific — just that these are less a priority now. Also, international panel members are crucial and referrals are appreciated. Canada and Mexico are the current priorities...especially Mexico where we have had a difficult time identifying individuals.

What about holes that no longer exist? — Some of the originators of the site discussed this just last week and we have no issue with NLE holes. I think the Biaarritz would be a terrific edition and it just so happens that I have recently done a fair amount of historical research (even ran it past Bhato!) on the precise location of the original and revised Biarritz in France.

What about legendary holes which still exist but have been altered or lost the features that made them great, or indeed have lost their impact due to changes in technology? — The evaluation criteria allows for this to be put forth prior to the evaluation. Also, panel members may form their opinions on the good and bad that comes with such changes. Since the Hall of Fame is a point in time induction, it is my guess that we will see inductees that perhaps have lost their luster, so to speak — but are still worthy of being included. Once inducted, we have no plans for any golf hole to be removed. We anticipate adding notations and footnotes — that is already provided for in the format.

Anthony — With 500,000 golf holes worldwide, the inductees are bound to be plenty. There is no set number now or in the future.

Kelly —  Yes, there are costs (more than I care to relate!) There are 3 primary partners of which I am one. The other two prefer to remain in the background, so I honor their wishes. We have all chipped in. Everyone has donated time and funding. Way down the road there may be revenues associated with links from inductees and maybe from appropriate ads (probably not courses or resorts). But, that is waaaaaay down the road ! For now, it is just enthusiasm and to fill a void by recognizing individual golf holes. We have managed to set the dBase up so it self runs for the most part — although we are finding the administration time is heavier than planned already. Thanks for the nice comments.

Forrest,

It would seem if you hang around GCA.com for a few more days you will have some decent ones to enter from Jims hole thread that is currently underway.  ;D

Kalen — I have always envisioned GCA as being a terrific resource for this program. I think the majority of posters here are ideal for planting the seeds for the best holes in the world.      ;)      Of course, that does not mean the majority of posters here are always right!

Pat — The plan is to have the first wave of inductees showcased by March. But, that assumes there are ample evaluations and also that the evaluations are positive. At present the trend suggests 50-60 nominations by the end of January. My guess (and it is only a guess) is that the first wave will amount to about 10 Legendary Holes and a few Honorary holes — guess only.
