AGNC # 18, can't believe its still on the board when you consider the history that's taken place on that green. It's also a good golf hole.
Old Mac # 17, Finally I get to have a channel hole!

I felt compelled to write up my list of courses, describing the merits of each hole and discussing why I choose the course that I did.  The front nine description is below.  I will add the back nine later.

1) Yeamans Hall, 420, Par 4: the perfect mid-length par four opener.  The wide fairway gives the player some leeway on the first swing of the day while still forcing him to make a decision.  The entrance road to the rustic clubhouse crosses the fairway just beyond the landing area.  This feature adds to the hole's charm.  The green is a wild Raynor Double Plateau.  A thrilling start to any round.

2) Garden City, 135, Par 3: a classic short par three over an old quarry.  Emmet routes this hole perfectly, and it is particularly difficult in a crosswind.

3) Long Shadow, 570, Par 5: Mike Young's classic in Georgia contains a phenomenal set of par fives.  The third is the simplest of the four.  It is also the most timeless.  The player must fight the slope of the land and his inner demons to place his second shot as far left as possible.  Such placement is the only way to create scoring opportunities.

4) Royal Melbourne (West), 470, Par 4: The first of many half-par holes on my dream 18.  The hole features a classic over-the-rise tee shot.  Then, the hole swings to the right to create a demanding approach.  MacKenzie at his best.

5) Merion (East), 490, Par 4: Merion's 5th is a true sleeper hole on a legendary golf course.  The hole was my favorite in Walker Cup actin because it so simple, completely natural, yet so maddening.  Timeless strategy abounds on the tee shot.  The green has to be one of the hardest in the world for a hole of such length.

6) CC of Buffalo, 175, Par 3: A totally unique Ross par three.  He built a monstrous green site 20 feet up from the floor of a limestone quarry.  The green is severely tilted from back to front.  Any miss will leave the golfer scrambling for a bogey.

7) Fox Chapel, 300, Par 4: My layout is laden with short fours, and this one is one of my favorites. It is a very neat variation on the Alps Hole.  The golfer can either challenge the left fairway bunkers with a layup or fire a driver at the green.  Long grass and trouble await the golfer who is too bold.  Raynor's green is a wild one and slopes from front to back.

8. Oakmont, 250, Par 3: This hole is exactly what a long par three should be.  Every golfer can be as timid or aggressive as he prefers.

9) Oak Hill (West), 365, Par 4: This green is the only non-Ross complex on the course.  Nevertheless, the wild terrain and the green's multiple sections make the hole completely unique.  I have played this hole for more than ten years, and it only gets better with age.

Now the Back Nine:

10) Royal Melbourne (West), 310, Par 4: A quintessential short par four.  The hole is very tempting from the tee for the long hitter.  However, like my seventh hole, there is also strategy for the shorter hitter.  No matter how far a player drives it, he should hug the left for the best angle to the green for the second shot.

11) Shinnecock Hills, 150, Par 3: I love short par threes, so I included two on my list.  This hole is one of the most devilish of them all and has been termed "the shortest par five in the world."  Miguel Angel Jimenez recorded an 11 here in the 2004 US Open.

12) Kiawah Island (Ocean), 450, Par 4: Like many holes at the Ocean Course, this one can be brute but also leaves some margin for error.  The long par four cascades downhill and concludes at a fantastic green site along the Kiawah River inlet.

13) Oak Hill (East), 600, Par 5: This hole constitutes the perfect three shot hole.  Off the tee, the player must decide how close he will drive it to the creek that crosses the fairway.  The second shot forces players to flirt with the right fairway bunkers to gain an unobstructed view to the green.  The green is first-rate and sits in a natural amphitheater.  The hole is never a slog.  Rather, its grand scale and its three testing shots provide a great test for pros and amateurs alike.

14) Cape Kidnappers, 330, Par 4: A beautiful clifftop rendition of the Road Hole.  This hole is simple while being dramatic and elegant at the same time.

15) Leatherstocking, 470, Par 5: This Devereux Emmet course in Cooperstown, NY is a true hidden gem.  The 15th makes great use of the right to left terrain.  The punchbowl green is elusive and very fun from inside of 75 yards.

16) Pine Valley, 450, Par: A very underrated hole on the nation's most cherished layouts.  Joshua Crane wanted to change the hole dramatically.  However, the sandy waste area on the right and the pond interact to produce effortless strategy.  The green complex is also magnificent.

17) National Golf Links of America, 360, Par 4: The great Leven Hole.  The last of my short fours, this hole has numerous options for all levels of golfers.  What more could one ask of a penultimate hole?

18) Seminole, 415, Par 4: A classic dogleg finisher along the Atlantic Ocean.  Was there an architect better at building finishing holes than Donald Ross?

Note: I have only seen ten of these holes in person.  Someday, I would love to see each of these holes in person.  However, I must, for now, resign myself to what I have read in the great books and on this website.

Jim Colton-

Please make the following two edits to my scorecard on the first page:

1.  You have my 10th hole as the 392 yard Par 4 at Pasatiempo...this should be listed as my 11th hole.
2.  Please change the yardage on my 17th hole (Waterville) from 196 yards to 180 yards.

Next, I am switching my current 13th hole, the 180 yard Par 3 13th at Muirfield to the 413 yard, Par 4 at The Old Course.

Finally, my last three picks are:

1.  Linville, No. 3, 472 yards, Par 4
2.  Bel Air, No. 10, 195 yards, Par 3
3.  Honors Course, No. 15, 475 yards, Par 4

Thanks for all your work on this Jim....it's been a blast.

George Freeman, you're on the clock...
