More cool old black and white images
« on: January 04, 2010, 01:46:59 AM »
The Pine Valley thread drove me to search through the rest of my image folder for old black and whites....

What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

Michael,

Great pictures. As for my guesses;
1st set
Winged Foot 18
Winged Foot 10
Pasatiempo 1

2nd set
Pasatiempo 11
Pasatiempo 5

I'll leave the rest for others.

Nice pics Michael
Some are given away a bit by the name of the course in the file name for the photo!
Thanks for sharing these.

HIR = Hirono?  Wow!

"martin" = Ojai?  Wow!

Love the old Pasatiempo and Cypress Point photos.

Thanks, Michael, good stuff.

This thread is not getting much airplay and suspect it might be due to the obscure title.
Perhaps if you changed it to something that describes what you have put up here better, the thread may garner some more (well deserved) attention. Just my 20c.

Sweet Pics . Really something to look at those old photos . I think I have an idea on most of them but a few have me scratching my head. What really intrigues me however is how much better they might have been back than as compared to how great people think they are now.

So much for 14 being the only hole at AGNC without a bunker! In that pic it has one and 15 and 17 don't. LOL

Great pics, Michael.

Do I see a pro laying up on #16 at Cypress during the Crosby?  There are still people on the green!  Or might that be an amateur?  Was the Crosby Clambake a pro-am back in the day, too?

The desolation of Pasa before (additional) trees & housing is amazing.

Spyglass isn't THAT old, but b&w pics can make it look so.

The Augusta aerial seems to be pre-RTJ.  The new version of #16 isn't there.

Is that ugly-looking retention(?) pond still there at Merion?   EDIT:  Answered my own question....yes, it's still there, and those saplings around it in the old pic are now big & probably hide it from view.

Thank you for sharing - - a lot of incredible greens probably stimping at the speed they were designed for.

The picture of 11 at PASA really took me off guard, all the other pictures were famaliar, but for some reason that ravine didn't seem that deep and scary when I played.  I think a lot more vegatation has grown in the ravine to make it appear less severe.  Man, want I would give to play Pasa when it looked like that, with no homes or trees.

What course is the last one in the last set?

I mentioned it above:  Merion.  They actually parked cars on Ardmore Avenue!

The John Stiles Augusta pic still amazes me.

You could land a plane on the 15th fairway for God's sake!!!  :)

the ridiculous growth of the augusta trees is hard to fathom.   there are few things i love more than old aerial pics of classic golf courses.

Many of those pictures are copyrighted and/or watermarked, some of the Pasatiempo ones are here http://www.julianpgraham.com/galleryPasatiempo.htm#

Kelly,

That irrigation pond at Merion is very much still there.  40 years ago it was quite visible.  Also, it doesn't happen very often, but more than one helacious slice by a right hander has ended up in there off the 11th tee box!
