Yep, this article is fantastic.  It is from the February 18, 1923 edition of the North American.  The author "Donnie MacTee" turns out later to be J.E. Ford, the writer of all those wonderful Philly area course reviews from 1924-5.

If the article above is accurate, do you think the five plans Merion had for the course was due in part to not knowing the exact land they were going to be able to acquire?

Just going on memory, the five plans were discussed after the Jan/Feb visit to Southampton and before the April visit from CBM...when they had acquired the land in December preceeding...

Ok, but is it also possible that the land really hadn't been completely settled for in Dec 1910?

Sure...I think it's documented that there were small purchases over a number of years, but to my knowledge, this change (15 years later ?) was the only one that enabled a real change from the original course...I think we'd have to admit those 4 holes are somewhere between mostly changed and completely redesigned.
