Maverick Trail- GCA whirlwind tour
« on: December 27, 2009, 12:54:37 PM »
I think I saw it mentioned on another thread, but since I'm a confirmed Strantzamaniac this should be done sometime in 2010.

A little agressive but doable. :P

Thurs- 8am- Tot Hill Farm

Thurs- 2pm- Tobacco Rd

Fri- 9am- Bulls Bay

Fri- 2pm- Bulls Bay

Sat- 8am- True Blue

Sat- 2pm Caledonia

Sun- 8am- Stonehouse

Sun- 2pm- Royal New Kent

Optional- Mon- 8am- MPCC  ;D

Who's in?  :)

Aggressive, but sounds like a lot of fun.  It might be best to insert a day of travel/rest/reflection in between each playing day, though.  Letting the experience of playing a really interesting golf course sink in is important as well.  Besides, you'll want plenty of sleep between those courses.  At least I would.

WORST trips I've ever been on have been those without respite/meditation.  Absolutely agree with Tim on this one.  My group will be in Williamsburg at some point in July to hit those two.  We did the Sandhills ones last year and will probably hit the three SC ones in 2011.  After that, go west, young man.  Don't forget he has another one in California, silver creek or something.

I wish I could take a week to do these 7 but unfortunately I just don't have the time.  :(

In a perverse, masochistic way, the chaotic schedule and pace is strangely appealing and adds to the adventure...but most guys would find it too crazy.

It's pure golf adrenaline, quite a rush!

I've also played several of these already so a little less of a need for reflection...

Go after the rush, but Let me give you this advice, then.  Play Tot Hill, then Tobacco.  Play Stonehouse, then Royal New Kent.  Play True Blue, then Caledonia.  Either logically or irrationally, one of the pairs will always impress more than the others and I just get the feeling that these are the proper orderings.

Whooops...looks like that's just the order you have.  Good planning.

Change up the order. You have more travel in there than you should. Start south with Bulls Bay, move up to the Myrtle Beach area, then to NC and then on to Virginia. Otherwise you backtrack pretty bad. Certainly MPCC is its own thing. You name the dates and I'd certainly try that though, if I could get leave that is.

John,

It's about 21 total hours of drivetime for me (Harrisburg PA area) regardless of which way you map it out. I was just trying to avoid the 9 hour straight shot to Charleston....but what the heck, maybe I should just bite the bullet and get it out of the way.  ;D

All 7 of his in 4 days would be a pretty cool feat!

silver creek valley is a redesign.  Warning:  it has a waterfall and a 19th hole ;D

Fun place though!  I'll be at Bulls Bay next year.  If you want to play Tot Hill, I recommend November during the Mike Strantz Memorial Tournament.  If you want to see Bulls bay, the Hootie in March is free to the public.

Then for you it would be better to just start in VA and work south, unless MPCC was a joke. I guess if that one was thrown out, then a rotation like you have would work best. But if you were intent to fly out to MPCC for a round, then it wouldn't matter.

I'll proudly take ownership of this idea originally in the "2010 Wish List" post http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,42431.70/

And while I agree, such a strenuous pace of play doesn't allow for much reflection, etc.... The realities of life force me to be as efficient with my golf trips as possible, I'm in for the grueling 4-day pace.

Rich- I knew I had seen the Strantz loop mentioned recently...glad that you acknowledged ownership!  :)

If we gather a few more kamikaze gluttens for punishment maybe we can start zeroing in on possible dates.

John- While I hope to eventually get west to play MPCC, yes it was a joke for the optional final round. Although it really would be a fitting  !

Ron- Agree with the B first, A last order of play in each area and also agree with your recommended order. Two are pretty clear cut, one may be slightly more open to debate..

OK, I will play if we put together some good dates, depending on what my out-to-sea/overseas deployment schedule looks like. Obviously if I am in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean or in Bahrain, I won't be able to play. Probably the best date for me would be in June, maybe late July. That would probably also be the best for money as well, at least for the North Carolina courses.

Not sure how we would be able to get onto Bulls Bay though, given its private, unless someone knows a member who would be willing/exceptionally nice enough to sponsor our play, a weekday round would be a given if asking for special invitation privileges.

And for what its worth, schedule at least 7 hours between the teetimes, depending on how geographically apart the courses are; I haven't looked. But with TR and THF, you're looking at a 4 1/2 hour round even teeing off early at either one (maybe, MAYBE, if we were to have the first teetimes of the day and people who had seen the course, we could get around in 4ish hours.) And then its roughly an hour drive between the two. I'm not sure the spacing in miles between any of the other two (certainly with a double-up at Bulls Bay, a big time spread wouldn't be needed).

If we can get some people involved, then let see what we can put together. I mean, even if its just 4 people, I'm in for it.
