Golf Suggestions from Beaufort, SC to St. Augustine, FL Area
« on: December 18, 2009, 11:51:41 AM »
My dad and I are heading out (pending we can get out of a foot of snow here in NC) Sunday for a golf trip to Jacksonville, FL. Can someone give me some good suggestions for a course from Beaufort, SC down to St. Augustine, FL.  We're looking for an affordable course (<$75 each) and probably public, since we don't really have any connections. Thanks!

You could try this course in Beaufort, but it will be s-o-g-g-y!

Same could be said for Crosswinds in Savannah, just off of I-95

They are both OK in terms of interest, and will definitely fit your price point.

Brett,
A fun spot would be Laurel Island Links, under $40.00. DL111 course near Kingsland, Ga.

Check out Sanctuary Cove by DL3 (w/ Fred Couples Signature). Very interesting visuals. And very conveniently located.

I second this--very cool retro features and right off I-95.

Also consider, Bobby Weed's GC at Fleming Island southwest of JAX. A little further off I-95 but great shaping and superb green complexes.

You're not kidding Derek, I was just looking at an aerial of SC and thare are many square greens and rectangular bunkers. What was Couples thinking?  ;D

Osprey Cove on the G side of the G/FL border is pretty good.

Square greens are classic greens.  Rectangular bunkering sounds interesting.

In Jacksonville check out:

St John's Golf and Country Club - good track, tough.

South Hampton - not as tough as St Johns, but a fun track.  Also, it is next door to St John's which can make for a good 36 day.  They are close to I-95.

Eagle's Landing - its in Orange Park and a bit of a drive from 95.  I liked playing this course.  It is not a significant design, but I always had fun and had to hit a lot of different shots.

Bent Creek - this is also out a bit from 95, but is a good muni course.  For the price, it was always in good shape and has some good holes.

I don't remember there being much in St Augustiine besides the World Golf Villiage (Slammer & Squire or King & Bear, King & Bear is the better of the two).

Don't play Royal St Augustine.  It has a lot of bad quirks and silly holes.  I hated it everytime I played it.

I love Osprey Cove. Played it a few years ago an has always been one of my favorite courses. However, they went private that next year. Any change since then?

Brett

My firm Billy Casper Golf bought St. Johns G&CC in St Augustine last week. We have been managing the course for the past two years. The course has been used for Tour Qualifying the past two years and is fun to play as well as challenging. The finishing holes on each Nine are particularly good. Dan Zimmer is the GM and does a wonderful job. Rates are much more affordable than the Wold Golf Ripoff Village!

You might try stopping in at Jekyll Island and playing Oleander, a Dick Wilson course.  Nice place and some fun golf courses.
