Is it me or is there a distinct lack of passports on this site?

Chappers

I have two passports, but little desire to cross an ocean on an expensive flight to play lots of expensive golf.  I have all the expensive golf I need right here.  Jeepers, Ireland was bad enough - its no wonder that country is in a mess.  With all the pubs full with people buying stupidly priced drinks its no wonder they can't make mortgage payments.

A great list.  You must have had a great run in the last couple of years.

Sam --

How big is the gap between your top two and #3 on your list?

It's fairly big I suppose. I think Austin Golf Club is a wonderful place and goes about it's business quietly. I'm always amazed how few of my fellow Texans who have played all over the state have even heard of Austin Golf Club. If I could be a member at any club in Texas I'd pick Austin Golf Club first.

As for Southern Hills I think it's a wonderful Maxwell and if it were on one of the coasts would be much more highly regarded. It's a wonderful club and Tulsa is a nice town but bias from the coasts keeps it from garnering more attention.

Mac,

Rich Harvest in my opinion is a good course, but if it belongs on those golf digest rankings it's somewhere near the end. That said, I think it's an incredibly fun course to play once a year (especially from all the way back) and the entire experience of going there is worth it. Rich Harvest was the first top 100 I ever played, so maybe I am unfairly biased and have hyped it up way too much in my mind in the 6-7 years since. There are some holes with way too many trees, there is a hole where you have to hit your tee shot on a par-3, then before you finish that hole you have to hit a ball off the tee on the next par-4 because otherwise you would have to cross the creek twice!

It's tricked up, overly penal, and just a plain tough golf course. But if you go into it knowing that, you will enjoy the day!

Wow the new is very high. What did you love so much about it?

Brian-

The New Course is more of a sentimental choice for me.  I really respect Old Tom Morris' designs and I played a ton of rounds there when I was in graduate school at St. Andrews.  It's a balanced, fair test of golf for all skill levels, and...

...there is no place on earth better suited for a golf course than the West Sands of St. Andrews!

Regarding RHL, other than the last five words, I totally agree! The astroturf tee, the backtracking situation you mention with tees for two holes next to each other, narrow fairways, forced carries over water/bunkers into just about every green, tree in the middle of a fairway with no real corridor on either side, and an awkward routing pieced together at different times makes this more of a candidate for the bottom 10 than anything else!

If you didn't have to play golf the place would be fantastic, however.

Big E-Shaping up to be a helluva year. Have Cheech get you a stack of 8 by 10`s signed by Snooki for when you head across the pond. Put it in the hands of the right starter and you never know. ;D

My list is feeling woefully inadequate next to some of the heavy hitters who have been dropping bombs lately. We might need a VIP room with second 25 for the Krahenbuhl's and Csigo's of the world.

To each is own.  I can only speak for myself and I say paying £500 and sometimes much more to cross an ocean and shelling out top dollar day after day isn't my bag.  I need other primary reasons to make the journey - golf just isn't important enough.

Update, part deux... Interesting to re-create these lists and see how time impacts one's impression of a golf course.  I don't know why exactly, but Essex and Wolf Run dropped off the list completely, St George's (Toronto) was added after replaying and others (including Sand Hills) dropped a bit.

1   Shinnecock Hills
2   Ballyneal
3   Merion
4   Oakmont
5   Sunningdale (Old)
6   Lahinch
7   Prairie Dunes
8   North Berwick (west)
9   Rock Creek Cattle Company
10   Plainfield
11   Prairie Club (Dunes)
12   Sand Hills
13   Pinehurst No 2
14   The Golf Club
15   St Andrew’s (Old)
16   Highlands Links
17   Sebonack
18   Franklin Hills
19   Kingsley Club
20   Victoria National
21   The Patriot
22   Shooting Star
23   St George's
24   Pasatiempo
25   Pebble Beach

And the next bunch would include...

Walton Heath (Old)
Wine Valley
Oakland Hills (South)
Southern Hills
Brookside CC
Cabot Links
Dallas National
Dismal River
Johns Island West
Old Town
Charlotte
Chambers Bay
Bethpage (Black)
