Slightly OT - Hardest Shot you have had to make
« on: December 18, 2009, 04:49:41 PM »
Yeah, probably discuss a thousand times, but ...........The thread about the hardest hole you have played got me thinking about the hardest shot you have had to make.

Perhaps the hardest shot I have had to make was when I was an eghth grade playing in a weekend tournament in the Sand Hills.
On the first hole I snap hooked my tee shot out of bounds to the left, threw my driver 30 yards down the fairway.  My father came storming out of the clubhouse, thoroughly chewed my butt and threatened to take golf away from me for the rest of my life.  I had to march down the fairway pick up my driver, come back and hit what was a huge block into the 9th fairway.  The shots are forever engrained in my memory.

Also, I remember standing over my second shot at the 17th at St. Andrews thinking this is the hardest shot I have ever had to deal with.  After hitting the green I thought wow that is a cool shot requirement.

Hard shots can be fun, grinding, gut checking, and embarrassing.............Please share a few.

If hardest means 0% success rate. I have teed off twice at #6 Sherwood, and put both shots in the waterfall. I even put the next one from the drop area in the waterfall. Fortunately, in two-ball foursomes, I left one shot from the drop area to the capable hands of Bob Jenkins.

That waterfall owes me two balls, and it owes Bob Jenkins one good Titleist. How's that for shirking responsibility?

Hardest successful:
From 160 to an elevated green from the left rough. Backswing and follow-through restricted by holly tree. 25-30 yards of pull hook to tap-in range.
Worst lie:
Hardest lie I faced was at the bottom of a 10" deep hoof print in a bunker on 18 at Spyglass. I opted to take an unplayable
Playing from too far back:
Successfully hitting the forward (ladies) tees on Sunriver (Crosswater) #5 on a windy, cold day, when that was the only option available. The other players weren't miserable, but much longer.

Well, I've had the shot from the left greenside bunker to a right pin on #14 at Tobacco Road. But the hardest shot I've ever had to hit was on #18 at Minnesott Country Club when I was leading a tournament by 1 stroke. Dense trees right, water left, fairway slopes to the left and my major miss is a hook. Yeah, that was a tough shot, but I managed to hit it like a bullet right down the center.

Other than that, the other 'hard' shots I've had have been more goofy, or because I screwed up. Of course the tee shot on #5 at Pine Needles (225ish par 3) is no breather, but I can't think of any really exceptionally hard shots at courses I've played, just shots in general.

Mine was a tee shot in the biggest tournament I've played in. It was on the first hole of sectional qualifying for the US Open and Jason Gore had just gone off right in front of me. Since he was the biggest name in the field there were 40 people watching my group go off right behind him.

Seeing as how the biggest tourney I'd played in before this was the local round a few weeks before, I was surprised my pants were still dry!

I proceeded to duck hook one my tee shot onto the adjacent hole about 200 yards out and 120 yards left. Started the day with a neat little double bogey, and followed it up with a four-putt on the next hole for another one. Luckily I got hot at the end and birdied 4 of my last six to finish at +3.

The hardest shots are often more from mental hazards than physical ones. :)

Hard shots can be two things, pressure shots or just a hard golf shot.

A few years ago I was playing the Medalist in Florida as a single with a caddie.  On what I think was the 2nd hole a par 4, the group in front of me waves me up as they searched for a ball.  The group was Ray Floyd, Ray Floyd Jr.,  Hank Kuene and somebody else.  I'm in a fairway bunker and have to hit about a 200 yards shot over a marsh to the green.   Low and behold I somehow made contact and put the shot on the green.  I practically soiled myself when Ray Floyd congratulated me.

Thats a cool story. I can remember my hands shaking on the first tee when I was fortunate enough to play a round with Mr. John Derr. CBS sports guy, been to every Masters tournament but 2 or 3. If you don't know about him, just type his name in Google; you'll see him mentioned in the same sentence with Ben Hogan, Karsten Solheim and others of that sort.

My first GCA event, the 2008 Kings Putter at Pasatiempo, with some 30 or so guys watching of whom I knew none. Not an easy teeshot to begin with,OB left, long hole, etc. Fortunately my partner,Shivas, hit a hard smother hook onto the driving range , and he can actually play so some of the pressure was lifted, but still 30 GCA guys watching........

The tee shot on the 1st at Riviera after being announced as Captain Ben Sims.  People tend to take notice at George Thomas layouts when that title is thrown around.

It was the only hole I birdied all day.

Hardest two shots: Up and down from 20 yards on the 18th green at Eagles Mere, Pa. in 1956. I was 12 and had a chance to beat my father at scratch for the first time. Got it to six feet and made the putt. My father congratulated me and told his friends in the bar that I had won our match. He was gracious and seemed normal. Many years later I learned that, while proud, he had also been devastated. He had been 34 at the time and it was quite a shock.

My father was a meticulous scorekeeper. I still have the card from that day, signed by him. A prized artifact of golden days.

Tee shot on the 16th at Cypress Point. Knowing it was a "once in a lifetime opportunity" - gave it more meaning.
