Anthony, I don't know about the best tee box ever but it is certainly all of the above.

Is there a donut in that green, or is that just a ridge creating two tiers?

  Bill,

It is actually pretty flat, especially compared to the other greens on the course. I think the different colors of the grass is giving it a look that it has different levels. It is an illusion. When you coming to Chattanooga?

Doesn't The Country Club in Brookline have a tee box on top of an outcropping?

I like it.  If you are gonna get funky, get down n' dirty in your face funky.  It may not be great architecture, but more importantly, its wonderful architecture,.

TCC's 4th hole has a tee built on a scaffold. Before you ask, yes, it works well. And yes, it's bizarre.

Well I'm glad we're adding to my ass shot totals.

I had no beef with the hole.  The tee adds to the experience.  And shouldn't a golf hole ask nothing more of you than to simply execute a shot every now and then?

I'd like to see how long they keep and maintain that tee back there. I know Tobacco Road has done away with two of the tee's on #14, the par 3, because they were difficult to maintain. Do they have an easy way to get a mower to the tee? If they don't, I can see this tee just quietly disappearing in rather short order.

John,

LMGC was built in 1925.  And the stairs leading to the tee are quite weathered.  So I'm guessing it's been around awhile, and will continue to be.

But to answer directly, I have no idea how long it's been there in its current configuration.

Sorry, I was thinking it was a different course, built very recently.

A)  I believe they use Nair or Veet to keep the grass tight on top of the tee box, which...

B)  In my opinion, must be played to be appreciated.  As in, from the pictures, it looks nice, but nothing whoo-hooo.  I'm sure that in person, there's a bit of whoo-hoo.

Judging from the turf I would say that the tee is popular.

Anthony,

Did you play MPCC during the KP in 2008?  This tee box looks somewhat more artificial than the tee box on #11 of the  Shore Course.

Some time ago, Doug Stein posted and explained that they use an old fashioned reel mower to literally push mow that tee area.  It's pretty small and this seems like a reasonable way to do it.  Also hand-watered.  Clearly it's a challenge to keep grass growing up there.

This was supposedly the only tee that Raynor's design included and the hole definitely looks better (and scarier) from up top.

Holes like this are one big reason that traveling and seeing all sorts of different courses is so much fun.  Just when you think you've seen it all......

I don't particularly care for the upper tee.  From down below, the fronting bunker and depression are not visible, making the hole appear to be shorter than than it actually plays.  The resulting deception is part of the hole's defense given its short distance.

  Scott,

I was not on the site at that time. I have driven by several times. How elevated is it?

Went to Lookout Mountain a month ago....I thought the course presentation and maintenance were absolutely wonderful....Proof that a course at altitude that receives a fair amount of moisture can be kept firm and fast.  I liked this hole but found the tee box to be more than a bit awkward and certainly not the "best tee box ever".

Kudos to the staff of Lookout Mountain...

Bart
