Sorry I could not produce better conditions for everyone.  I Hope everyone had a good time and look forward to having everyone back out some time.  I will say this is the coldest weather we have had this early in the winter season in a long time.  It is 24 outside here right now this morning also!

  Observations

1- Eric Smith is a Class Act.

2- Matt Varney has great potential to be the next Ginger Beer guy.

3- At the next meeting I am sitting by Mike Young....I called it first

4- I would like to invite the California guys to come visit and play next December

Eric,

I propose we setup a GCA Golf Day in Tennessee around May-June 2009.  We will plan to host an event for all GCA interested in playing The Dye Course at Rarity Mountain in the morning and then drive down I-75 about 45 minutes to Holston Hills playing later that day.  We can close out sitting around overlooking Holston Hills telling jokes and having some drinks together.

I am thinking May 23-24 weekend or the next weekend May 30-31, 2009.  I can think of at least 12 people that are already wanting to play so lets make this a big gathering in Knoxville.  Eric and John you guys confirm what works best for Holston Hills?  Maybe this a two day thing over the weekend for all those interested in playing.

Newport Grape and Apple Pie will be served!

Matt

Wow, again in my absence from GCA for awhile I didnt even know about this event.  I was sad reading the title, but I guess vindicated when I saw the weather there in Knox.   It was cool, but livable on the other side of the mountian here on Sat.

I hope to see when the next outing is arranged.  Good to see some familiar faces in the pics.

I would also say at least of interest would be River Islands GC on the coming or going day just 20minutes east on I-40.  While not in the league of Holston by any means, I must say it has one of the most unique routings I have ever seen playing from one bank of the river across islands in the middle of the river, to the other side only to return across the river via some other islands on the way back.  It is worth the trip for the uniqueness of the routing alone.

Hopefully here is an areial showing the course routing...

We'll see if that worked.

Well that didnt work, if you really want to see it you can Mapquest River Islands Golf Course in Kodak, TN and zoom in until you see the course on two sides of the river and the islands in the middle of the river.  Pretty unique.

River Islands GC  is for sale.  One recent asking price was $4.x million or so.

Not sure what the present price might be.  Something less, no ? ;)

It is fun to play and an interesting Arthur Hills layout indeed.    Course was constructed to be a private course by the four owners (which included the property owner) in late 1980s/early 1990s and opened as public.   It was sold to present owners about 8-10 years ago. It is just not in the best location for Knoxville play but on the plus side is near tourist megashopolis of Sevierville/Pigeon Forge & Smoky Mountain National Park.

And it is too bad I am low on cash.

You guys will just have to plan your December golf on the Canadian west coast! About 50 degrees in your language yesterday. Firm and fast.

Rain tomorrow.

A few mentioned wanting to try a Costa rica outing over the winter.....I can arrange if enough are interested.....flights are around $500 to 600 into Liberia....I can have a very very good deal on the golf...and can either stay at  www.haciendapinilla.com   or the new JW Marriott that opened this week  http://www.realhotelsandresorts.com/rhr/info/en/MarrGuanacaste.aspx
if there is truly an interest we can work on it....

BTW,  management feels the same way at Holston,   it is those pesky little things like insurance, liquor licenses,  running a club and stocking the bar for the membership,  etc.   Yikes.

Matt,

I am marking my calendar for May and looking forward to the Rarity/Holston Hills combo.

Eric,

Thanks for all your work in setting up this trip, I had a great time meeting everyone, hanging out and because we didn't play, I left the course not depressed about the state of my game!

Mark
