What do you think about this hazard?

The shot into this green is blind and with a long iron or more.

I played my 3rd shot from the exact spot of your 1st picture last week.  Not terribly easy.

It's amazing how hard putts on that green fall towards the tracks.

If you play long to avoid the hazard it is an impossible up and down because the green slope so much.

Anthony,

I thought it easily the most disappointing architectural feature at Aiken Golf Club.  It just doesn't fit with the balance of the course and the vegetation is ridiculously high, even worse when I played there, near the front right edge of the green.  Even more penal since the uphill approach is somewhat blind.  Love the way the fairway is cleared left of the green all the way to the RR but the hazard and vegetation ruined what might be the best hole on the golf course for me.   The dry grassed creek bed would be a better option.

Good assesment Bogey. Same thing for me. One stroke penelty for a slightly off approach and a difficult up and down after the drop if you do find the hazard. When you first see it, you think.........What is that doing there?

"Google Earth" provides a nice aerial of the hole, especially the green and surrounds

I'm told that, at one point, this hole was a par-5 with the green moved back about 30 yards to just before the trees starting up the hill.  I'm not sure when and why this changed.

Please post a picture of the shot from the line of play, ie the middle of the fairway!

I hit a nice 2 wood to the center of the fairway leaving a semi blind approach and enjoyed walking up over the crest of the hill to first notice the patch of brown fur appearing to abut the front right edge (we were playing to a front right pin) of the green.  THEN as I continued to survey the landscape I thought I saw a lip off the front left edge, so I walked even closer to find that little bunker which upon closer inspection was not greenside but back maybe 30-40 ft? from the green, and THEN I saw that bailout to the left, the long grassed old creek bed thing cozying up to the railroad tracks. A lot going on up there!

But in the end, Tim Taylor gave me a good yardage, I think 158 and I took a high drawing 8 iron out over that little brown patch, which was a small wet cat tailed area, a stretch to call it a pond, but anyway my ball landed safely on the green, settling just under the hole, maybe 15-20 ft to the flag and 15-20 ft to the hazard.

I liked the feature and thought the green site had a lot of character.

As Pat mentions above you get a nice view from Google Earth:
