Garland,
Before Bandon Dunes opened I would have answered Sunriver. If I average 60 mph Bandon is exactly 4 hours from Portland. Where do you stay on property at Chambers Bay?

I believe you know where I stay when in the Chambers Bay/Home Course area. ;)

When I was just out of college we used to venture up to Penn National from Washington, DC.  It was cheap... inclusive... and just perfect for 8 or 12 or 16 guys.  You stayed in rooms in what they call "Guest Lodges" which were small buildings with 4-6 rooms in each.  You ate breakfast in the clubhouse (usually waiting for the frost to melt)... you ate dinner in an old farmhouse on property called The Manor House.  It was absolutely wonderful.  Value season rate was $259 and you paid the replay cart fee back in the day.  Its up to $438 now.  I remember playing in 40 degree weather and 65 degree weather.

Wonderful memories of a true golfers' paradise... less than 2 hours from DC.

I wish I lived closer to Bandon......You can have Kohler, and Pebble Beach for that matter....

Buffalo is incredibly well-located for this type of thing.  Within New York state we have the following within three hours:

Holiday Valley--18 holes
Peek 'n Peak--36 holes
Byrncliff--18 holes
Bristol Harbour--18 holes

Beyond the Allegheny Reservoir in Pennsylvania, you hit courses like

Blueberry Hill, Cable Hollow, Jackson Valley and Conewango Valley--18 holes each

We can hit the Quail Hollows, Little Mountains and others in northeast Ohio in under three hours as well.

Heading west/north, there is so much good golf in Niagara Falls, Ontario, along with the entire run from Niagara to Toronto (Twenty Valley, all the Hamilton courses, etc.), and from Toronto north to Lake Simcoe/Barrie.

4 hours must not eliminate very much for many people, unless you inhabit the lunar landscape.

What public or resort course(s) do you frequent, say every year or so that has both good golf and on-site lodging with a restaurant, within 4 hours?

My golf trips tend to involve playing as much golf as possible, eat dinner, fall asleep and do it again.  Amenities don't matter much because even if they are nice, I don't enjoy them much.

My repeat destinations are:

The Harvester, Rhodes Iowa - nothing there but golf with lodging on site

Brainerd - The Classic at Maddens, Deacon's Lodge, the Preserve and the Pines - resort area with more to do at night

Giants Ridge/Northland - Usually have stayed on site at Giant's Ridge.

Eric,

If you are driving there, why does it need on-site lodging and restaurant?

Maybe Eric's not towing his Airstream!

Cuscowilla is over 4 hrs for me but about right for you.  The cabins are really good.

Eric:

The answer to this question for every single person in Oregon is Bandon Dunes.  That's one of the main reasons it's been so successful.

There are some pretty nice motels right next to lovely Tokatee (3 hrs from Portland) that make it very inexpensive golf holiday.

Not sure about the food in the neighborhood, but how bad could it be?

Eric,

I can't think of one stay and play that I would drive to that's within 4 hours of me in NE Ohio.   I guess I normally drive 6-8 hours and go to NC or a Chicago/Wisconsin option.  I also favor the 10-12 hours to multiple spots in SC.  Obviously, i'm staying longer than one night though.

Monterey is about 3 hrs or less from most of No. Cal. and you can stay at the Del Monte Hyatt with Old Del Monte golf course on grounds and shuttle to Pebble, Spyglass and Spanish Bay. Restaurant and Bars on grounds.

Northstar at Tahoe is a good one for summer or winter if you are a skiier.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Tim, I hope you mean skiing winter and summer.  Can't stand the golf course!  (at least couldn't back in 1975 when I was there last!)  I really think there's an untenable relationship between terrain for skiing and the game of golf.  JMHO of course!

David T. Thanks for that very interesting story.  I want to make it clear that it was a couple of local residents that said that, not me. I kind of wonder now if they weren't the architects of some of those houses just trying to get a reaction out of me.  Next time I go I'll pay closer attention the the buildings.

I dig this photo . . .

                  Sea Ranch

Makes me want to just fill my pockets with golf balls and go on a hike with an 8 iron.
I am not sure how many of you know that the Sea Ranch (building) was designed (primarily) by an Architect named Charles Moore.  He along with Robert Venturi were seminal in the anti-Bauhaus movement in American Architecture in the mid to late 60's.

Eric,

Palmetto Bluff is 50 minutes, Harbour Town an hour-and-ten, Sea Island about 90 minutes, Kiawah and Seabrook about 2 hours, and Wild Dunes about 2.5.  (And Myrtle just within your 4-hour distance limit...)

But the sad fact?  90--95% of my golf adventuring begins with a drive to Savannah International, followed by a stroll through airport security!

From Atlanta the best is the Lodge at Sea Island in Saint Simons; top of the line all the way, food, golf, lodging (when a butler comes with the room then you know you are getting 1st class service).  If money was no object I would go there at least 2x a year.  It is a little more than 4 hrs though.
