I was contacted by a relative who is looking for more information on Maurice McCarthy. Have there been any posts? Who may have some information to share beyond Cornish/Whitten?

Steve, thanks.  .........but, that is not a lot for a man who had such a contribution to golf in PA and the East. Anything more out there?

Thanks, Rory. I will make that call. I believe Mark Fine has a profile, so I am interested to revisit that. We had considered him for the Bunkers, Pits  Other hazards book, but had limited space and were forced to limit our pages.

If you can get them to give you the contact information for the long time pro Jay Weitzel (I believe that is the correct name), he may be of some help as well.  I believe that he is retired but Mr. Weitzel was one of the deans of Pennsylvania golf professionals and was at Scioto when Nicklaus was a kid.  I believe that he also played a fair amount with Hogan and others of that era.

I am seriously questioning the contributors here — can a man responsible for so many courses be so under-known that we cannot possibly find more information on him?

His Hershey Parkview course closed several years ago - now overflow parking for the park.  His Hershey Hotel course (9 hole) closed a couple years ago when they expanded the clubhouse.  I played and enjoyed both.

He has a very goo 18 hole course outside of Battle Creek, MI called Marywood CC that is a hidden gem.

The West Course at Hershey CC is still McCarthy.  I suspect that Lester George would also have information. My recollection is that Lester was to be involved with a project at the club. 

McCarthy also designed Spring Creek in Hershey which continues to be affiliated with Hershey CC.  It was designed for the children of the members.

I saw a reference in a 1938 article on the US Am to a Maurice McCarthy Jr. Perhaps his son?

...Gentle push, encouragement and plea to cough up whatever we can on Mr. McCarthy. With no books on his work, not much (apparently) written, and only a light mention in previous posts, I am hoping someone has a decent anthology of his work and accomplishments.
