Melvyn will be #1 with a bullet next year…
« on: November 16, 2009, 04:11:30 PM »

Melvyn will be #1 with a bullet next year after he is successful in his attempt to get Woods suspended from participation in The Open said Tim Bert on another thread.

Did I throw my club. Did I swear, did I nearly injure a spectator, no but what Tiger is doing is clearly catching. The whole point of my post was to try to stop violence and people getting hurt. Clearly not that important to the majority of GCA.com Members.

Yet do you know what is most sickening about all this, it’s that not one of you have said anything, commented on Tim post. Congratulations, you deserve each others.

Melvyn,

First, the whole issue with Tiger is beyond anyone's control, let alone a bunch of architecture freaks. Do you really expect to exert some influence on Tiger with your posting here?

Second...this is a site about golf course architecture, yet it somehow devolves into a site deciding which of our human natures is acceptable or not.

I don't get it.

"#1 with a bullet" is also a cultural reference likely only meaningful to a handful of us 'Muricans.

It's always dangerous to infer motives from those who choose to ignore....

I've been travelling for a few days and haven't logged in.  What the heck are you all talking about?  Melvyn's going to get Tiger kicked out of the Open?  That won't be a big deal, Tiger has only been playing the Open for the first few days as of late!!!!  Oh baby...that was a good one!!! :D

And what does #1 with a bullet mean?

It's worth all of us on this site remembering that there are representatives of many different cultures here, some of whom don't have English as their first language and many who have different understandings of the meanings of some words.  Expressions like this may mean something to some but be meaningless to others (I'd never heard that phrase before).  Rather than raecting like Melvyn did here and assuming a phrase means something, or like Joe or Will, why don't we all just apply a little thought (as George did) to potential confusion?
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

MarkP:

Good point. And you too GeorgeP. But I have another idea-----we have a 17 page, 590 post thread on Tiger Woods' appalling behavior at the Open last summer. What's that all about on a golf architecture website? Would any of you, including Melyvn Hunter Morrow, be upset if Ran Morrissett or Ben Dewar just deleted the whole God-damned thread and any others like it on here?

Number 1 with a bullet is a music industry term meaning that a song so exceptionally hot that it's rising fast.  Number 1 with a bullet is the highest rating you can get.  We might have a lost in translation here:)

The opposite is "number 99 with an anchor"...as in dragging it down.

Tom P,

I wish they would.  Just like I wished they'd pull the Merion thread, though at least that had some arcitectural relevence.

Melvyn - You and I have voiced differences in opinion in the past, but if you took my above comment as an offensive one, then I clearly miscommunicated in my post.  My singular point was that if you were truly successful in your campaign to have Tiger excluded from the British Open at St. Andrews, then you would indeed be the most powerful person in golf in my opinion.

If it was the "#1 with a bullet" comment that put you off, then I apologize and that was indeed a cultural oversight on my part.  I meant exactly what Jay clarified by that remark and nothing more.

Certainly a misinterpretation of the use of words and not intended to be a sickening remark or threat.

I apologize if my choice of words were interpreted in any other manner.

MarkP:

Yes, those endless Merion threads did have some architectural relevence but only for some serious insomniacs----or at least and perhaps more accurately to say, some serious to nigh-on terminal insomniacs!

I have never suffered from insomnia---it's just that I've never needed much sleep. If I ever do suffer from that particular malady, though, I will simply take W.C. Fields' expert advice and just get some sleep.

I removed my comment from the other thread due to avoid additional misinterpretation.  I stand by my comments that the intent was completely innocent, and I have no problem with my comments being quoted on this thread as long as folks understand the meaning behind the words.

Cultural or idiosyncratic language differences aside, you, Melvyn, need to get over yourself.  What's becoming increasingly clear is that we don't deserve your narcissistic and pedantic perseverations on manners any longer.

Melvyn,

I feel I must defend my good friend Tim Bert. Whatever quotation he used in his illustration it was not meant to be hurtful or threatening. He is one of nature's gentlemen and when you meet, as I hope you will, it will be revealed.
