First day in Bandon
« on: November 12, 2009, 10:20:24 PM »
Got to Bandon today, played a warmup round on Bandon Crossings as I hadn't swung a club in 6 weeks, it doesn't compare to the other courses, but it was fun and worth a play in my opinion, after the round we drove to the resort and walked a few holes, have never had butterflies like this, there is something magical about this place, Pacific Dunes/Bandon Trails tomorrow can't wait!

Ryan,

Have fun! I wish I were there! and don't forget to keep the lofted clubs in the bag from around the greens....

Looks like #1 at BaDunes, and I resemble that remark about "doesn't compare."  Those are some awfully nice looking holes at the Crossings.  I'm looking forward to playing it in about six years or so.

Why?  Isn't Ryan only offering his opinion?  He has played the Crossings and his opinion is valid.  U haven't so your only speculating.  Which is fine, but if I haven't played a course I will certainly listen to someone who has.   Not that I'd let someone else's opinion determine where I play or what I like.  I just don't think I'd make a habit about calling someone out about a course they've played that I haven't....

Very true Joe, I agree that Crossings is worth a play. I played it when I went up to Bandon, though Old Mac wasn't open yet. It's a fun afternoon if you're legs are tired and you want to take a, wait for it... cart. There are definitely some good holes on the course. My favorite was the 7th (if I recall correctly).

It's a quality track that does a good job with the land it has to offer. Even though you're staying in golf heaven, a break from it is ok while you are there. The four courses at the resort deserve your full attention, but this place shouldn't go overlooked. I think it's been said before but if Bandon Dunes doesn't exist, this course gets some recognition within the state of Oregon.

It's not links golf, but it's still fun.

Alex--

Again, to each his own.  But I think u missed MY point.
Ronald took exception to Ryan's comments in regards to the crossings not comparing favorable to the resort.  I was only curious how someone who has not played the crossings could take exception with comments made by someone who has.
I'm of the opinion if your legs are tired then you shouldn't play golf.  But that is my opinion...

Played Pacific Dunes this morning with my girlfriend, WOW! Definitely out of this world, it was a tough way to start, it was raining sideways from about hole 3-14, played one of the worst rounds score wise of my life, but I walked off 18 soaked to the bone, loving life with a big smile on my face, I think that pretty much says it all.

After I dried off and grabbed a bite to eat,the weather cleared so I walked over to the trails and played by myself, finished in just over 3 hours which was great, played 2 balls the whole round so got to try a variety of shots, the short game really benefited from that, was one of the most memorable rounds I've had, just can't say enough about this place, oh and thank god for jacuzzi tubs because my feet are done!

Pictures coming soon!

Let's get this out of the way. . .

On the par 4, 14th, did you enjoy the coolest tee shot on Trails followed up by the highest pucker factor shot(s)?

Also, nice drive on BT's 15th.

Nice pictures by the way.    The 11th at Pac might look wicked in black and white.

Joe...are you spoiling for a fight?  I'm not.  Are you wearing briefs a size too small?  Mine are comfortable.

I'll offer an opinion on any topic I deem worthwhile; you are free to make judgments regarding the validity of the opinion.

I'm always a bit put-off when someone carelessly tosses out the critique/criticism "it doesn't compare to..."  I find it hard to believe that the fellow who built many of the bunkers on the original BaDunes course, the owner of Crossings, has a course that "doesn't compare to."

The tee shot on 14 was great, hit it about 20-30 yards short, but it was all downhill after that, second shot went in the bunker, chipped over the green, back onto the green and 2 putted for a beautiful 6, toughest short par 4 I've played, off to give Bandon Dunes a try this morning!

I will be experiencing the exact same thing one week from today. We will probably be 3 or 4 holes into our round on Trails. Can't wait.

Ronald;

In the interest of accuracy, the shaper of some of the features at Bandon Dunes course, as well as Pac Dunes, Bandon Trails, and Old Mac, is Tony Russell.  He was the contractor at Bandon Crossings, the builder of the course.  The owners at Bandon Crossings are Rex and Carla Smith; they hired Tony, and it was one of the best choices they could have made, IMO, in their development of that property.

Hope this helps,

Tom

Thanks very much for that clarification, Tom.  I knew that there was a connection between the courses.  I apologize if anyone lost a job or a hubcap over my error!!

I agree that hiring a top-shelf shaper is the best investment any owner/builder can make.  When all is said and done. those elements that only a dozer artist knows make all the difference.

Ryan,

A first trip to Bandon is always special.  I assume you course at home is closed or closing and this is a nice dessert on your golf season.  It can be very hard to go from a Bandon trip back to everyday golf - I always have a month long golf hangover upon my return.
