I refuse to compare Ganton to Woodhall and while it's always fun to bait the hook with Irish, I'll let that one go, too.
I will say Ganton possesses some of the finest angles of any course anywhere, angles that effectively Tiger-proof a number of holes. Additionally, the 3rd, 13th, and 17th present half-par challenges that require even pros to ponder and make decisions.
There's also an analogous "fetch" presented by the open expanse of surrounding moors, giving the wind the distance to build (or just make the transit from the sea).
The conditioning means the greens can be both firmed and slicked if the organizers so desire.
Lastly, slow players run the risk of being eaten alive by the Hell Hounds, Werewolves, and Heathcliffs known to maraud the moors after dark.
Why, it even has a range!
I will concede the clubhouse is rather minor for these sorts of affairs but as for that, let them eat cake -- Ganton cake!
On a more-serious note, are you aware Ganton claims more R&A members than any club outside St. A's? This is the real reason Ganton will not get an Open. The toffs are not of a mind to share.
If the scores go low, so be it. Make it a par 68.

PS As for the club champion finishing under par, if not mistaken they've managed two players on one of the recent Curtis Cup teams. Despite an octogenarian demo skew, they've got some playas, too.
