LACC North would be an excellent US Open venue. A little on the short side now though.

That would be an awesome venue. They'd probably move the tee up on 1 though, to make it par 70 and a 490 yard downhill par 4.

As for making the course longer, that might not be easy to do. Holes 2,3,5,6,8,9,10,12,14,15,17,and 18 (maybe 5-10 yards if possible) do not allow for any more room to extend the tee back. Hole 4 could be made into a 230 yard par 3, that's an extra 25, and 11 could be pushed back to make it around 260, but that's not really necessary.

I think the only hole that could be lengthened and have any effect is 16, but even on the holes that are lengthened the fairway bunkers are not really in play for today's pros.

Unfortunately a U.S. Open at LACC would require Rees, and I would love to see that course stay as is. I've played Riv and LA and actually enjoyed LA north more.

Based on what I've seen happen to many classic venues that have hosted majors, I'd rather see Pine Valley remain Major-less.

No risk there, Slagbert!  I'd love to see an Open at Dornoch too, but you'd have to convince the R&A and their hangers-on to spend a week or so in the caravan park, as what limited lodging there is locally would all be taken up by the players.

LACC is currently being restored by Gil Hanse with help from Geoff Shackelford:

We completed our restoration of the fairway bunkers on the North Course at The Los Angeles Country Club, with Geoff Shackelford this Spring, and we are looking forward to continuing the restoration of the course in 2010.

Guys for a layout to even remotely be considered for a major it must have more than just the course element -- there must be plenty of leg room for adjoining corporate tents, the media compound and all the rest. Being near a metro location is helpful but not a central priority. Clearly being able to handle the crowds and traffic is also something that needs to be factored.

For what it's worth I can name two NY courses -- Sebonack and in the greater Albany area -- Olde Kinderhook. Both have the capabilities in hosting such an event -- US Open or PGA.

Well, it has the essential infastructure for sure----the Jacksonville airport isn't far (very accessible airport from all over the country), it has the infastructure to accommodate thousands of people to stay and it as plenty of room for corporate tents if they shut down one runway on the smaller-plane airport across the street.

Of course I'm referring to the world's greatest hidden gem for the US Open-----The Fernandina Beach Municipal GC. I doubt Tiger Woods could break 300 on that course in the US Open, provided the USGA upped the US Open to 90 holes!  ;)

LACC North always comes comes up in this discussion.  I normally don't like to say anything adverse about a course, but I just don't get it.  I thought it was good but not that good.  I think its aura tends to elevate its merit.  I can see it holding an Amateur but not an Open or PGA.
