How is this the 7 handicap hole?  Looks like 4 is a great score here that pretty much feels like birdie!!

Playing west wouldn't that be into the prevailing wind as well?

From the tee map you provided -- it appears one would need a tee shot in excess of 330 yards to get around the bunker on the right. Is that correct? I'm assuming back tee placements for such a stated distance.

Maybe others can weigh in ...

Matt,

From the yardage book - it indicates the following to the front of the bunker on the right side of the fairway (front to back tees)

114/169/193/219/238

It looks like the bunker is about 40 yards long so you probably get about

154/209/233/259/278 to get past it depending on which tees you play.

Here's a photo of 1 and 18 from the rafters.

If you can fly it to the little ridge past the bunker you will get a nice roll to the top of the next ridge.

Chambers is definitely a course where a nice draw off the tee comes in handy.

 Robert Trent Jones. The course is in Tacoma, Washington next to Seattle. The 2010 US Amateur and the 2015 US Open will be played there.

That is the #1 green.   The green at the far left is #17.

Rich - Is there a new back tee that adds 50 yards to the hole where you started your measurement?  The card shows it playing 498 from the back tee.

Tom, I created the picture above to demonstrate the flexibility of configuration for hole 18 and hole 1. USGA talked about how they can play both 18 and 1 as par 4 and par 5 depending on conditions. I believe they are planning to have a possible tee box where I start my measurement.

For normal play, the back tee would start from 50 yards in for the 1st hole.

Donal,

The course is by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. with able assistance from Jay Blasi and Bruce Charlton. It is located in University Place, WA south of Tacoma. It is built on a rock and sand mine/quarry. Therefore, even though it is set in an very highly populated area, it sits well below the surrounding developments and provides for a very secluded golf experience. It is fescue on a sand base and a joy to behold (play).

It is also walking only, as explained here

Can someone tell me if a strong player hits a tee shot will the ball propel further down the right side ?

If that happens -- what is the approximate club selection -- 5 iron / 6 iron ?

No doubt those who can't hit the ball in excess of 275 yards will likely have a tough time getting to the hole in two blows and likely with any pull will end up where the photos already posted show. Wow -- that is a very daunting place to be after two shots -- then to have to play back up that ridge to the green.

  Matt,

  From the back tee.............. the first left bunker it 281 to the front edge. If a player hits his drive just left of the riright bunker it is the best line. A long iron can be bounced in from right of the green.

Matt,

When I played there I hit it up the right side, I consider my self a fairly strong player.  Hit is fairly well and I belive I had roughly 190-200 in. I dont recall it really propelling down though. I remember being up past the first bunker on the right side, then hitting it into the divot field from there.
