Pebble Beach and MPCC Shore articles
« on: November 11, 2009, 11:55:21 AM »
Two interesting articles form the Monterey Herald this morning:

Pebble Beach and the US Open: http://www.montereyherald.com/sports/ci_13761379

Changes at MPCC Shore: http://www.montereyherald.com/sports/ci_13761382

We might have the most active local golf press in the US right now.

The 10th hole bunker work was completed in late June so if that picture was taken after that, it should be.

John,

In the same article:

"According to MPCC general manager Michael Bowhay, the renovations are not being made in anticipation of the course's return to the AT&T Pro-Am rotation.

"They are not AT&T or PGA Tour driven changes at all," Bowhay said. "These were club changes motivated by membership and had been discussed for quite some time."

Sorry to hijack...But.... There is some news brewing on the PG front.

Apparently, the city may be doing an about face with regards to their attitude towards the local golfer.
Meetings are scheduled and hopefully the best Golf Club at a public course will once again have viability.

JVB, The Kingdom of Golf in America should have active press coverage.

News is rounds are down 40 percent. Rounds with caddies, even more.

The new and improved Monterey Ponds....uh... I mean Pines looks nothing like it's former self.

Tree removal and extensive trimming has invaded PG too. However, the wall to wall green seems like a short term solution to attract and will likely end up causing other issues down the road because of the lack of sun.

That is definitely post work. One of the things that Rees did was restore the original tee way to the left of that line. Was this a Road tee shot on Raynor's course?

As for the Shore, the changes were mostly functional. I think about thirty yards were added to the course.

Will,

I am not sure what you mean by Rees Jone's moving the 11th tee to the left. The tee at the back of the 10th hole was originally proposed by six- time Club Champion Andy Nottenkamper and built by John Zoller. Rees' tee was an extension of the tees that Raynor had there from day one. The additonal yardages on the Dunes come to something closer to 150 yards, not thirty.

I would say that  there is nothing functional about the changes to the Shore. It looks a mess.

Bob-

I clearly stated that 30 yards had been added to SHORE not the dunes.

I as sorry you are not happy with the work on the shore.

Will,

I stand corrected.

Have you seen the work on the junction of the 16th green, the 4th green the 5th tee and 17th tee? It looks like the Hampton Court Maze. The 4th teeing area has been completely changed to accommodate the wishes of a homeowner whose house was hit by an errant drive, the first such incident in almost fifty years.  The idea to build a tee for the "big hitters' across Stevenson Drive adjacent to the 18th tee has been temporarily abandoned. The cost of removing telephone poles and burying the cables might have had something to do with decision.

I was part of the team that did the work, so yes, I have seen it.

As for four, I think the house was hit more than once and when they went to look at the problem they found many balls on the houses roof. But hey that's the club's decision. We just tried to do the best we could with those stipulations. Sorry you are not happy with it.

Will,

I am not complaining about the work at the fourth tee as it stands, it might well be an improvement on the old hole. As for the confusion further on, it is not your fault at all. It was a briliant move of Mike Strantz to change the routing at No. 5 to go north giving those wonderful vistas but in retrospect you must admit the flow of the Baldock course was very good indeed. I don't quite know how one could sort out the confusion that now exists. I do think that had he used the current 17th hole as the 4th hole and the fourth as the 17th it would have eliminated the cross-over effect that we play today.
