Aerial of the Day #81 - 24 Apr 2002
« on: April 24, 2002, 06:43:52 AM »
For some reason, this looks vaguely familiar.  No matter, this
looks like a place that many of us wouldn't mind being right
around the corner for our home course.  Unfortunately, few
can say that.

Out in the middle of nowhere, I would gather.  I vaguely
recall that there are no satellite shots available of certain
places in Nebraska.

Need clues - can only do my part by checking in and keeping
the lines short across the page.

This course has had a few threads of its own on GCA in the
last year.  At least two of them were not about debating the
merit$ of the course.

Yes, wind is a predominant factor here.

Yes!  Good one, Sean, though I wonder how few will
understand that one.

If Mr. Nuzzo had not used sunscreen at Barona (seemed like
one of the few who did), then he would have been a perfect
fit for this course.

Also, a clue from yesterday's AOTD applies to this
course.  Something about a camp?

Is that a seashore or lakeshore in the bottom right
of the picture?

That's a really interesting picture, and I'd have to believe it's an older course.  The bunkering patters look almost like William Flynn at Shinnecock in stretches, but I know of no other similar courses he built.

I don't have a clue what it is, but it seems to have some tremendous variety, and I sense I'd enjoy playing it.

The body of water in the lower right is a lake which has a name that is very similar to a recently minted coin.

Boy, take a week off and I sure miss the aerials of the day.
Even after the clues, I have no clue.  But, the aerial is enough to say that it is a great course that appears classic in every way.  I was trying to think of something near lake of the Ozarks but am drawing a blank.  Besides, this looks like prairie golf at its best...

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

wow, it just hit me!  This one was a good one Scott.  I think, if I am remembering correctly, that Golf Digest did a pictoral on this course and another VERY well known course that shares some characteristics with this one including both having opened the same year.

Just like Astoria yesterday, this course is special for a
different reason.  If this course were private with a national
membership like Sand Hills, it would be much more highly
regarded and sought after.

Anyways, this is The Links of North Dakota at Red Mike
Resort, more commonly known as Red Mike, designed by
Steven Kay.  Past threads on it include the merit of the
course, but the more recent ones had to do with the sale and
auction of the course in February for a pawltry $467,500.
The extremely remote location is the primary reason for its
financial woes.  Otherwise it is a fine links-style course with
great views.

Here is the color aerial (rotated from actual North on top)
that I had put in the auction thread:

and the course's web site, which has a few pictures here:

http://www.redmike.com/

and on the course link:

http://www.redmike.com/course.html

There was a whole slew of pictures for the auction web site,
but I couldn't find them any more.

Clue alert:

I referred to the remoteness in the first post.

"merit$" referred to the past threads on the auction and sale
of Red Mike.

SPDB referred to "ARE Vehicles"=RV's, the RV 'resort'
associated with the club.

The sunburned Mr. Nuzzo was the biggest clue of all="Red
Mike".

The camp with yesterday's clue referred to Lewis & Clark,
who also camped very nearby where Red Mike resides, on
what was then just a river, not a lake.

That lake is Lake Sakakawea, very similar to Sakajawea, the
Lewis & Clark Native American travelling companion and
recent recipient of a place on a coin.

Lake Sakakwea is actually the Missouri ("Show Me") River,
dammed into a man-made lake.

Mike Cirba,

I had visions of Shinnecock from this aerial as well.
Especially the par 5 in the lower left.

I thought we had that aerial so I did immediately think of it
and put it right out of my mind because of that reason.  But
maybe it was just an aerial on the thread that discussed the
sale.  At any rate, once again my face is red as Mike's.

Going out on a limb with conjecture and wisecrack comments
on AOTD is like writing your own obituary!  :-/

But, it is fun... ;D

After seeing the variety of bunkering patterns created by Kay on an open site, I'm particuarly excited to see his Emerald Links in NJ, opening in July, which is on a former, treeless landfill, and will have a version of Mackenzie's Prize winning Lido hole, as noted recently by Jamie Slonis.

I've played a number of Kay's other courses, but I'm most excited about the potential of this one.  I sense he also has more of a free hand from the developer, which is not always the case, particularly with "theme" courses like Architects Golf Club.

I must admit I got the RED part.
But i kept thinking red Hook, red Shank, red Slice, red Ass.
Hey, I'm proud to be part of any clue.
Kind of like making it as a clue on the NYT crossword.

Mike,

I wasn't at the Barona outing to be able to make any swing comments!  ;D

Red Hook is a decent beer.  Red Oak is an excellent beer.  Is Red Dog even on the market any more?
