I just received my copy of Golf Magazine yesterday and lo and behold Jim Furyk is on the cover promising to fix all of your swing faults! Seriously, I know the guy knows more about golf swing in his pinky than me, but if you saw a local pro swing like that on the range, would you take a lesson from him?

But that also got me thinking, what are some golf course equivalents of Jim Furyk - i.e. golf courses that are not, shall we say, aesthetically pleasing, but consistently good. I am having a hard time thinking of any golf course worth playing that are not knockouts in the beauty department as well.

I figured the group here could come up with some though.

If I saw a local pro on the range with a swing like that I would be a little worried to take a lesson, BUT when you see the person (Jim Furyk) stripe every single ball he hits and puts all of his drives on a blanket I think he knows what he is doing.  Just because he has a weird looking swing doesn't mean that he knows nothing about the swing.  Its not like he is Mo Norman and trying to convert everyone to that Natural Golf Method he had going, which only worked for him since he hit millions of golf balls.

Rustic Canyon's site is pretty interesting. It is nestle between two hills and those hills are quite lovely.

I would consider a lesson from a Furyk type because I would assume he would be more about function than form, and my form is hopeless.

It is in a spectacular setting and may not qualify, but I always find myself impressed by Whistler Golf, despite the fact that the neighbouring courses have more of a wow factor.  It's like the tomboy sister that cleans up well and is more fun to spend time with.

Wouldn't any course in a "loop" configuration qualify?  Or maybe one with two "loops" of nine holes?

Moe Norman did not ever try to convert anyone to the Natural Golf Method, that was someone else trying to sell his idea of what Moe was doing - and it only worked for Moe. 

My idea of a Jim Furyk course - from the first view it would look normal, but once you get into it you find a few quirks but it has a happy ending.
 Prestwick?  Royal Aberdeen?  Panmure?  Elie?  Old?  Royal Porthcawl?  in fact most courses in the UK are more Jim Furyk than Norman Normal types.

A course where every hole was the exact same; you have to play each hole without a club then go back with a club and hit the shot.

I've never been there, but from how my friends describe it I would say Carnoustie. Not pretty to look at, but a hell of a test.

you don't see the ocean from the Old Course...

it's the north sea and the only place where you see it is on the 11th green... from the other spots, you see the eden estuary. the sea view don't do anything for the Old Course.

Muirfield. The first loop routes outside and then it drops inside on the second loop.(By the way,most any double digit player would break 80 if they adopted Furyk's out and drop move.Most go in and over the top.)
