Gary Player Opens Course in Poland
« on: October 20, 2009, 01:03:30 PM »
This came across my desk earlier...Player has a course in Poland:

GARY PLAYER’S NEW POLAND COURSE MAKES EUROPE’S TOP 100

(West Pomerania, Poland) – Just three months after opening, Gary Player’s first course in Poland, Modry Las Golf Club, has been selected as one of the Top 100 European golf courses in Golf World’s recently published list.    As the only course in Poland to make the rankings, Modry Las puts Poland on the world golfing map and adds to the Gary Player Design portfolio of over 300 golf courses across five continents.

At the Grand Opening this past July, the Black Knight remarked, “Our design at Modry Las is world class and it is surrounded by beautiful countryside – wild flowers, mature trees and lakes – just a beautiful setting”  The course is characterized by distinct and dramatic bunkering and has already hosted its first tournament on the Polish PGA Tour.    The ownership at Modry Las is also working with the Polish Government to develop a youth program in Poland, a cause that is passionate to Gary Player.

Located just outside of Choszczno in the West Pomerania region of Poland, Modry Las is within close proximity to the Baltic Sea and Scandinavia, as well the German border and Berlin. This region of rolling countryside with abundant virgin forests and lakes has historically been a popular summer resort destination.  With the emergence of golf in the area, tourism is sure to thrive in the growing, refurbished regions of North Central Europe.  For more information on Modry Las, visit www.modrylas.pl.

Modry has been open for a while. Poland has quite a few courses now, one of my colleagues went to a golf conference in Warsaw earlier in the summer.

A bit further east, but the most interesting project I'm familiar with in that part of the world is a Ron Fream/Kevin Ramsey course to be built on an island in the Dnieper river very close to downtown Kiev.

C'mon Jay, let's keep this on eastern Europe.  There's plenty enough WEur threads out there already.

We've just opened a course in Poland, too... The course is called Sand Valley Golf & Country Club and has been under construction since 2006.

Few pictures below. Maybe Tony Ristola can post a few more of better quality.

#2 is a dogleg right with a waste bunker on the right from tee to green entrance.

#3 short

Green 6 from behind

Green 8 from behind

Green 9 and view across 8 and 11

Paslek, about an hour south of Danzig.

I'll post links to hole-by-hole construction sequences with commentary soon. Half are complete, the other half to be done in the coming weeks... sifting through thousands of photos is... fun!

There's piece in Paul Daley's latest book about the project called Rescuing Sand Valley.

Tony, Kai - that looks very interesting... Can't wait to see the finished product.

Just as an aside -

Carya in Turkey opened in 2008... It just recently made the same Golf World Top 100 list... this was the first design of Philip Spogard of this parish, working as associate to Tim Lobb of TPL...

Thought it might be worth mentioning...
