Victoria Golf Club or Royal Colwood?
« on: November 01, 2009, 08:13:08 PM »
Heading to Victoria in a month or so and only have one day available to golf(if the weather allows me), both courses offer limited public play, Victoria Golf Club has the ocean but I've heard good things about Royal Colwood too, just looking for opinions of people that have played either or both?

I have played both and personally I prefer Victoria.  It is rather quirky but lots of fun with some terrific holes along the ocean.  Royal Colwood is also very good and likely a harder course.  There is a member of Royal Colwood who posts on GCA so I assume you will hear from him.

If you are looking for club that has character on and off the course play Victoria . It has a great feel to the whole place . If a great golf course is all that matters then go to Colwood . Both are very special .
Firm greens, firmer fairways.

Jeff Mingay could probably give you some sound advice.

Thanks for mentioning both of these clubs as I had only researched Royal Colwood before as it is an AV Macan design - probably his best. It appears to have trees in great numbers, much like Columbia-Edgewater in Portland, another Macan design.

VGC looks like an incredible setting a more open which I tend to prefer. The setting along the water is spectacular.

A nice choice to have.

Ryan,

I've played both, Victoria and Colwood, over the past month and a bit. They're both fine golf courses, but completely different experiences; which is really cool.

Ideally, you should play both  :)

The posts above sum things up pretty well. Basically, if you're into (some) quirk and tradition, you should see Victoria; if you're a more conventional thinker, you'll probably prefer Colwood (longer and a bit more straightforward). Settings are completely different as well. There are some neat, old trees at Colwood, but nothing compares to playing golf by the sea at Victoria on a beautiful day.

Hope that helps.

P.S. I'm heading to Victoria next week. We're scheduled to do quite a bit of restorative-based work on the course over the next few months and more. Be sure to say hi if you end up at VGC.

The pictures of Royal Colwood do seem to overemphasize the trees we have.  While they are on the course in abundance, they are not as intrusive as many photos show.  Not to say they don't come into play though.

Agree with Jeff here, you should play both.

One thing I would mention is that at this time of year, Victoria can be subjected to some fairly intense storms.  If one happens to come in during your visit, Victoria will be a lot harder to play because it is on the water and open to the wind.

Look for a message from me in your inbox.

Victoria Golf Club is probably one of the most scenic courses in the world. The snow-capped Olympics are only thirty miles away and they will appear as if they are right on top of you. Mix in a waterfront/clifftop setting that sticks right out there and it's hard to beat. I have never played there, but I have vivid memories of being eight or nine years old, jammed into my coat and tie, eating lunch at the clubhouse and just staring out the window for an hour.

We drove by last year when we were there and my girlfriend had to lock the car door to keep me in.

I will be a bit more blunt .
If Colwood had the money that Victoria GC had , it would be no contest . RC  would win all day long . But they don't have the funds to give the presentation that their wonderful course really deserves .
Both though are great day of golf . Victoria I think is the oldest club west of the Mississippi and Colwood is Macans best . A no lose choice for sure.
And I totally agree that the trees at RC although huge and plentiful do not hinder the lines of play nearly as much as some say .
Firm greens, firmer fairways.
