Adrian, I have decided the only way to counter your comments is to visit one of your sites and make my own comment on your work, trust you have a few in the UK. I presume that is what you mean by rev up. If nothing else, it will be a useful exercise and it will be interesting if others take any notice of my opinions. Who knows I might even like what I find, lucky I have an open mind or do I ?

Any family member of Old Tom Morris should recieve more respect. If his opinions or his way is offensive he gets a free pass with me.
Anthony
why should he get any more respect than anyone else? just because he's related to someone? Paul, Put yourself in his shoes. What views Do you expect him to have? It comes as no surprise that A decendant of OTM would have such deep attitudes about carts and players poor behavior. Why are others offended? Only a virgion would be offended if you told them they needed laid. Or a monkey by an organ grinder. Anthony

Melvyn:
Surely by now you can see the meaning of what Tim meant. He has gone even further to explain his meaning for using the term. Tim is a gentleman of the highest order as others above have also commented.
If you haven't already sent him an apology for the overeaction, please do so now or post it on this thread and be done with it. He clearly meant no harm and you are smart enough to realize this.
It is unfortunate that there is such a disconnect with what you say and what you mean on the internet.
My best to you,
Eric
Edit: I see now you have emailed Tim while I was typing, good man.

I really do hope you are joking. I posted two Winston Churchill quotes, explicitly stating that "there are two that seem appropriate for our discussion group." Please read what I wrote. I stated that the quotes seem appropriate for our discussion group. That is a reference to Golf Club Atlas, not Melvyn specifically. I'm sorry if Melvyn misunderstood and I'm sorry that you seem incapable of understanding. What do you think this quote means? "Never hold discussions with the monkey when the organ grinder is in the room." I can explain it if you would like, but here's a hint - it's not intended as an insult.

Let me try to clarify the matter.
You see, in the old days, newspapers and magazines published weekly charts ranking pop music hits, as decided by record sales.
There would be the artist, the name of the song, then a column for the number of weeks it had been on the chart.
When a new song debuted, it would be followed by a hyphen, or "bullet", since it was in its first week.
Thus, a recording would normally enter a Top 40 chart at number 36 or whatever, with a bullet.
A "Top Ten Hit with a Bullet" was a huge sensation, and a "Number 1 with a Bullet" was as rare as a double eagle, (just to give you some GCA relevance). Only the most anticipated releases by the biggest names would achieve that exalted status.
I hope that settles the argument.

Anthony, There were two quotes listed. Both were commentary on the way the discussion group communicates. You might have noticed that if you weren't looking for some sort of insult.
The first quotation "A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject" refers to our GCA group propensity to continually argue the same points without any interest at all in changing opinions. I think it's fair to call Melvyn an anti-cart fanatic, but I didn't specifically do that. One could call a large number of other people on the site fanatics about various issues. It's this type of fanatacism that leads to some contentious threads continuing for way too long.
The second quotation "Never hold discussions with the monkey when the organ grinder is in the room" refers to the pointlessness of trying to debate or discuss a topic when someone is not interested in what you have to say. The use of the term "monkey" in this context does not describe a particular individual. I'm pretty sure Melvyn understands this. I'm sorry you do not.

I beg to differ. The monkey is the underling, or slave, the organ grinder is the boss. The phrase means don't talk to the no.2 if the chief is around to talk to. In Victorian England street entertainers with pipe organs played by winding a handle ("grinding") often had trained monkeys who passed round a hat to collect donations.

If that's the correct interpretation, then that quote is not relevant to the GCA discussion group. I shouldn't have used it. Here at home I've heard it used the way that I described it. I viewed the organ grinder as a distraction, not as a master. In any case, no insult was intended towards anyone. That's what I get for quoting a Brit.

After looking around on Google it seems this quote has several potential meanings, including the one John stated...so I'm not sure I would jump to conclusions that he had devious intentions by posting it.
It does appear to be a Churchhill quote though:
A Winston Churchill (British politician, 1874 - 1965) quote, "Never hold discussions with the monkey when the organ grinder is in the room,"

Mark - I would have interpreted it as meaning "don't expect the monkey to speak frankly if the chief is in the room". I don't know if that is relevant to GCA discussions or not - I felt so good about getting the expression that I didn't move on to application. Oh well - another earnest B- for me.

There's another commonly used expression in the UK, when talking to a junior - "I want to talk to the organ grinder, not the monkey". Fair to say that some insult is intended to the recipient of that expression!

Kalen, I appreciate Mark explaining his point of view. I'm sure no one thought I had evil intentions, though my misuse of the phrase could lead to misinterpretation. Though it's not relevant here, I'm reminded of a former co-worker who got very offended when someone saw him typing and referred to him as a "hunt and pecker." The best solution would be for me to spend more time in England and gain a richer understanding of the language. Until then, probably best that I revert to Goethe: "Everyone hears only what he understands." Since this is translated from German, I'll wait and see if Ulrich (or Emil) catches me in another error.
