Cabo Del Sol Ocean Course (Pics)
« on: October 25, 2009, 01:31:36 PM »
I just recently went on a 5 day cruise from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas.  I had the great opportunity to play Cabo Del Sol thanks to the very nice Mr. Greg Tallman.  I must say that this is one of the most enjoyable golf experiences you could have, a great golf course with an AWESOME ocean view from every hole.  The holes along the ocean are phenomenal especially 5, 6, 16, 17, 18.  Obviously Ran just did a profile on this course so I won’t say too much because his commentary is much better but I want to provide some more pictures.

Hole 1 Par 4 (436 yards)  A good uphill opening hole, a high cut iron is required into the green

Hole 2 Par 5 (574 yards) A good par 5 that has a huge wash down the left hand side and then turns to the right

Hole 3 Par 4 (327 yards) A driveable par 4 that is somewhat like 10 at Riveria with the small narrow green that is horizontal

Hole 4 Par 5 (555 yards) An awesome downhill par 5, it leaves you in the 230 to 250 distance for your second shot but it is real scary considering you have to carry the wash to a small green.  I layed up and took my par

Hole 5 Par 4 (458 yards) Another great hole, real hard to commit to the right line off the tee here, I wussed out and pulled my drive and was left with still 245 yards into a calm ocean breeze, its a tough hole.

Hole 6 Par 3 (190 yards)  This hole and 17 and honestly two of my favorite par 3's in golf, you can't have much more prettier hole than this.  I took a walk down the rocks to the left of the hole and saw tons of crabs all over the place.

Hole 7 Par 3 (160 yards) A good par 3 that has a real long green

Hole 8 Par 4 (438 yards) My favorite long par 4 on the course, a uphill drive to a narrow fairway then an uphill second shot that has to go over the wash.

Hole 9 Par 4 (469 yards) A long par 4 that goes a little downhill after the tee shot

Hole 10 Par 4 (436 yards) A wide fairway but the approach is scary having to hit a mid to long iron high up in the air over all the cactus.

Hole 11 Par 4 (352 yards) A good option hole, I tried to go down the left fairway but over cut it into the middle wash, still made a par though.

Hole 12 Par 5 (515 yards)  It leaves you in a real reasonable distance to attack the green in two, BUT there are bunkers everywhere and unless you can hit a towering draw with a three wood, you are not hitting the green in two.

Hole 13 Par 3 (213 yards) This is an EXTREMELY tough par 3, when you are standing on the tee the green looks bite size.  I had a 5 iron in my hand, it plays downhill and into the breeze a little bit, and barely made it into the front left bunker.  There really is no where to miss on this hole you have to hit a good crisp iron shot.

Hole 14 Par 4 (366 yards) The next 5 holes create a great finish to the golf course.  This was my favorite short par 4, looks like a tight tee shot but there is more room to the left and then you have to hit a crisp wedge to the uphill green.

Hole 15 Par 5 (530 yards)  A great downhill par 5, I thankfully hit my tee shot a little bad and was just short of the middle bunker and then hit a three wood up to the green for a nice birdie.

Hole 16 Par 4 (447 yards)  Best Hole on the course,  the tee shot just amazes you and then the approach might be one of the coolest looking approaches in golf.  You hit a iron into a green right up against the ocean with sail boats in the background, can't get much better than that.

Hole 17 Par 3 (178 yards)  Best Par 3 on the course, pictures don't do justice to this hole it is just unbelieveable.

Hole 18 Par 4 (430 yards) A great finishing hole that bends to the right with the green right up against the ocean.  It is easy to wuss out and pull your approach shot.

Ok so on the cruise I also saw the property in Ensenada that Tiger Woods is building his golf course, and I must say though the property looks amazing the town of Ensenada is crap, so I don't know if they are just planning on having everything at the club so that the members down leave the property.

I did go by the property where Diamante Dunes is though and took some pictures.  It is on the pacific side just north of the massive cliff top homes.  Past the homes is a big mountain that is a massive sand dune, the pictures I will post are all to the south of Diamante Dunes

Here are the two pictures I took from the boat of Diamante Dunes, it is real hard to see the golf course but you can see a little green in there.

Jason... photos from almost 3 years ago... have had less than 6 inches of rain since that time! Looks as though We had just had our last big rain just prior to Peter's visit. Things a bit overgrown which would typically happen in the late summer/early fall.

Not related to the lack of rain but rather an aggressive vegetation removal/control program you can see the differnece in the 14th today versus as Peter saw it in 2009.

Peter's photo looks like Ireland in the background... mine reaffirms our desert locale!

I didn't see the date stamp on the post at first, I was impressed with how green the place was compared to December. The course is still amazing!

Greg- What is the turnover rate for security guard who stands near 6 & 7 to keep those of us savages staying at the Sheraton from walking up the beach with to play the 2 par 3's at sunset? That jobs seams like torture even if you are a local.

The real purpose is to keep non-golfers from trapsing about throughout the day. It is amazing how ignorant and selfish some people are intent on being. Picnic on the 7th tee? Sure why not. I am not joking.

Greg, is the beach open in between the 7th tee and green?  Looks like an amazing spot...

One must carry about 60 yards of beach from the tee which is the desire to control guests walking from one hotel beach to the other through private property (beaches are spearates by the rocks on whcih the 6th hole and 7th tees sit). While tons of peple will congregate just off the edge of the 7th tee on the rocks there is no real reason to walk the beach between the tee and green unless one is impropoerly and illegally trying to cross pthe private property to do so. We have been successful in curtailing this traffic... er was that the economy and bad press?  ;)

And Peter's photos are of the old 7th... here is the new/current 7th as described...

Yes, Soil is screaming for fresh water....add to that our hotel friends dumping their desal residuals into their waste water that we take and it is a battle!

Actualy taking fresh water out in spray tanks to the most affected areas. Crazy times.

One good 2-3 inch rain would be like hitting the lottery at this point(timely analogy). Never pray for an hurricane but...

Howard, Impetus was varied... getting holes away from development, getting them on/in the Ocean, improving what (at least in my mind) was a mundane hole in a spectacular setting(7).

Bottom line, reclaimed land from development allowed for new 7th, 20 years experience allowed more aggressive placement of everyuthing closer to the water (including the 5th green)... & & 7 deatiled here...
